Shortnend: Book 3
Chapter 1 Owl Post
- Harry is back at the Dursleys’, reading A History of Magic. He has to write an essay on Witch-Burning in the Fourteenth Century. He reads about the pointlessness of it. Muggles were not very good at recognising it. On rare occasions when they did catch a real witch or wizard, the witch or wizard would perform a basic Flame-Freezing Charm and pretend to be in pain. Wendelin the Weird was famous for having himself caught and enjoying the frozen flames.
- The Dursleys locked up Harry’s spellbooks, wand, cauldron and broomstick. Harry managed to ‘steal’ a spellbook back, since he needs it to write an essay about Shrinking Potions.
- On his birthday three owls fly in; Errol, Hedwig and another, unknown to Harry, wearing the Hogwarts crest. The first letter is from Ron. It has a cutting from the Daily Prophet saying that Mr. Weasley won the annual Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw. Mr. Weasley stated that they will be spending the gold on a summer holiday in Egypt where Bill works as a Curse Breaker for Gringotts Wizarding Bank. It also has a letter from Ron, asking to meet in London next week and mentioning that Percy has become Head Boy. In the letter he also finds a Pocket Sneakoscope which looks like a miniature glass spinning top, with a note explaining that it is used to notify the owner when there is someone untrustworthy around. Hedwig brought a letter from Hermione. Hermione also included a Broomstick Servicing Kit as a present, containing a jar of Fleetwood’s High-Finish Handle Polish, a pair of Tail-Twig Clippers, a compass to clip onto your broom and a Handbook of Do-it-Yourself Broomcare. The last parcel was from Hagrid, containing a book called The Monster Book of Monsters with a note. The last letter was from Professor McGonagall. It is said that the new school year will begin on September the first and third-years are permitted to visit the village of Hogsmeade at certain weekends if they bring a filled-in permission form from a parent or guardian.
- At breakfast next morning, Dudley, Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia are already sitting at the kitchen table. They’re watching Dudley’s new tv, a present from his parents. Harry hears a news report about an escaped convict, Sirius Black, who is armed and extremely dangerous.
- Aunt Marge, Uncle Vernon’s sister, will come to visit today. She does not like Harry. Once, when Harry had trodden on the paw of her dog, Ripper, and it had chased Harry into a tree, she had refused to call the dog off until past midnight. Uncle Vernon warns Harry to be polite, to ‘not do any funny stuff’ and to stick to the story that Harry attends St. Brutus’s Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys.
- Harry tries to get the signed permission to visit Hogsmeade from Uncle Vernon by saying “the signed permission will make him remember better the things to say and do while Aunt Marge is there”. Uncle Vernon will see if all goes right and then take a look at the form.
- Aunt Marge arrives. Harry takes her suitcase upstairs and goes back to the kitchen. Aunt Marge is telling her brother that her dogs are taken care by Colonel Fubster. She starts humiliating Harry by berating him.
- The next day Harry suffers more of Marge’s dislike for him, only restraining himself by thinking of the Hogsmeade form and focussing his thoughts on his Handbook of Do-it-Yourself Broomcare. On the final evening of Marge’s stay she starts saying cruel things about Harry’s parents. Harry, having difficulty restraining himself, tries to force himself to remember page twelve of his book A Charm to Cure Reluctant Reversers. Aunt Marge’s insults get worse and Harry snaps. He causes his Aunt Marge to start swelling like a balloon, drifting up in the air. In panic, Harry takes his trunk from the cupboard, takes his stuff from his room and flees from the house
- Harry wanders several streets after having fled from the house until reaching Magnolia Crescent. Realising he had just broken the Decree for the Restriction of Underage Wizardry he is sure he will be expelled. Trying to decide what to do he feels himself being watched. With a Lumos spell he makes light, and sees something very big with wide gleaming eyes. Stepping backwards, he trips over his trunk and at that moment The Knight Bus, a transport for wizards, arrives.
- The conductor is Stan Shunpike. To not make the Ministery of Magic easy to track him, Harry pretends his name is Neville Longbottom. He figures out the bus picks up stranded wizards. The driver of the bus is Ernie Prang. Harry pays to be taken to London. Along the way one of the other passengers, Madam Marsh gets out.
- Stan is reading a copy of the Daily Prophet showing a photograph of Sirius Black, the fugitive he saw on the news report at the Dursleys’. The news article which accompanies the photograph states that the Ministry of Magic has confirmed that Black has escaped from Azkaban Prison. Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic states they’re doing everything they can to capture him. Fudge has been criticised by some members of the International Federation of Warlocks for informing the Muggle Prime Minister of the Crisis. Fudge explained the Muggles had to know since Black is a danger to both the wizard and muggle world, reminding them of the massacre of twelve years ago when he killed thirteen people with a single curse. Stan relates that Black was a supporter of You-Know-Who (Voldemort).
- One by one the passengers leave the bus. Harry is taken to Diagon Alley, in front of the Leaky Cauldron. Before he even has taken his trunk from the bus, he’s welcomed, not apprehended, by Fudge and taken into the Leaky Cauldron. Tom, the owner provides tea and a private parlour for Harry.
- Fudge tells Harry two members of the Accidental Magic Reversal Department dealt with the blowing-up of his Aunt Marge. Her memory has been modified; no harm was done. Harry won’t receive punishment, which doesn’t make sense since last year he got an official warning when a house-elf smashed a pudding in his uncle’s house. Harry asks why but Fudge refuses to explain. Harry leaves it at that, happy for not being punished but suspicious of the reason.
- Being led to his room, he finds Hedwig who has come back after having been sent away from the Dursley’s house
- For the remaining days until school starts, Harry stays at the Leaky Cauldron. During breakfast each morning there he watches other witches and wizards arguing over articles in Transfiguration Today, Warlocks and Dwarfs. He spends long days exploring Diagon Alley, and outside Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour, watching people showing each other their purchases (among them, someone showing a lunascope) and finishing his essays, sometimes getting help from Florean Fortescue himself.
- Harry has refilled his money bag with gold Galleons, silver Sickles and bronze Knuts from his vault at Gringotts and it requires a lot of self-control not to spend everything at once. He sees a set of Gobstones, a wizarding game, and a moving model of the galaxy in a glass ball, but doesn’t buy them. Most tempting is the new broom, the Firebolt, which he sees in Quality Quidditch Supplies.
- The only things Harry ends up buying are new school supplies. He needs potion ingredients, new robes, and new school books, including the ones for the two new subjects Care of Magical Creatures and Divination.
- He goes to Flourish and Blotts to buy his new books. In the store all the copies of The Monster Book of Monsters are kept in a cage since they act like small monsters themselves, snapping at each other and tearing pages. The store manager complains it’s the worst case since the bought two hundendred copies of The Invisible Book of Invisibility which “cost a fortune and I never found them!” On his book list there is Unfogging the Future by Cassandra Vablatsky, and the store magager leads Harry into the back of the shop where, on a small table, there are books about fortune-telling like Predicting the Unpredictable: Insulate yourself against Shocks and Broken Balls: When Fortunes Turn Foul.
- While the manager is showing Harry a copy of Unfogging the Future and talking about it, Harry’s eyes had fallen on a book called Death Omens: What To Do When You Know The Worst Is Coming, on which he sees a big black dog on the cover which looked oddly familiar.
- Harry also buys Intermediate Transfiguration and The Standard Book of Spells, Grade Three and then returns to the Leaky Cauldron.
- On the last day of holidays he meets with Ron and Hermione. Ron got a new wand, fourteen inches, willow and containing one Unicorn tail-hair. Hermione has three bags of books; she will have more subjects then Ron and Harry. Among them are Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, Ancient Runes and Muggle Studies.
- Hermione wants to buy an owl with her remaining ten galleons. They go to the magical-creature shop Magical Menagerie. Ron has his rat Scabbers examined there. Scabbers is already old, has a tattered left ear and a missing toe from his front paw. Suddenly a huge orange cat called Crookshanks attacks Scabbers and it takes them nearly ten minutes to find Scabbers after he had had taken refuge under a wastepaper bin. Hermione ends up buying the cat.
- The three find Mr. Weasley sitting in the Leaky Cauldron, reading the Daily Prophet. Mrs. Weasley, Fred, George, Ginny and Percy arrive some minutes later. Next day they will be brought to King’s Cross by ministry cars. On the last evening, Harry overhears a conversation between Mr. and Mrs. Weasley about him. They are talking about the fact that Sirius Black is presumed to be after Harry and whether or not Harry should know about this. Harry would be safe at Hogwarts while Dumbledore is there. And although Dumbledore isn’t fond of them, he will allow the Azkaban guards to be stationed around the entrances of the school grounds
- It is their last breakfast at the Leaky Cauldron. Mr. Weasley is reading the Daily Prophet while Mrs. Weasley is telling Ginny and Hermione about a Love Potion she’d made as a young girl. The ministery cars arrive and they depart for King’s Cross to get on the Hogwarts Express at Platform nine and three-quarters.
- Before leaving, Mr. Weasley wants to tell Harry something, but Harry interrupts, telling him that he already knows about Black. Mr. Weasley wants Harry to promise he won’t go looking for Black. Then Harry joined Ron and Hermione on the train.
- In their compartment, there’s only one person, Professor R. J. Lupin, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry tells Ron and Hermione about Black being after him.
- Harry’s Sneakoscope starts whistling, appearantly without reason. Ron suggests to have it fixed at Hogsmeade in Dervish and Banges. Hermione asks ron about Hogsmeade. Ron tells her he wants to go there to go to Honeydukes, a sweetshop. They’ve got everything there, he tells her; Pepper Imps which make you smoke at the mouth, Chocoballs and sugar quills. Hermione just knows facts from books; in Sites of Historical Sorcery it says the inn was the headquarters for the 1612 Goblin rebellion, and the Shrieking Shack is supposed to be haunted. Harry won’t be able to go since he has no written permission.
- Crookshanks tries to attack Scabbers again.
- Draco, Crabbe and Goyle pass through their compartment.
- They are nearly at Hogwarts when the train stops and the lights go out. Professor Lupin wakes up. He has conjured up a handful of flames for illumination. When he gets up to check out what’s happened, a cloaked figure enters the compartment. An intense cold sweeps over Harry, he drowns in coldness, he hears screaming, and passes out. When he comes to, he is lying on the floor. No one else heard the screams he heard. Lupin explains it was the effect of the cloaked figured which entered; a Dementor, a guard from Azkaban.
- The train continues and they arrive at Hogwarts, being welcomed by Hagrid. There are more Dementors guarding the entrances. Hermione, Ron and Harry are called by Professor McGonagall to follow her to her office. Professor McGonagall heard from Lupin that Harry was taken ill on the train and called Madam Pomfrey to take a look at Harry. Then Harry and Ron are excused while Professor McGonagall has a word with Hermione about her timetable.
- Ariving in the Great Hall they find that the Sorting Ceremony is already over. Dumbledore adresses the students about the Dementors, telling that nobody is to leave school without permission. He also announces Lupin as the new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher and the retirement of the Care of Magical Creatures teacher Professor Kettleburn. Hagrid will be teaching that course.
- After dinner they go to Gryffindor tower, entering through the portrait of the Fat Lady with the new password “Fortuna Major”
- On the first day of school, Draco is heard mocking Harry’s fainting on the train at the Slytherin table. Ron notices the apparent mixup in Hermione’s timetable, having three classes at the same time, but Hermione says it’s all fixed with Professor McGonagall. Harry, Hermione and Ron set out for their first Divination class at the top of North Tower.
- They had never been to the North Tower before and need to ask directions. Sir Cadogan, a personage in one of the paintings on the wall, shows them the way.
- The teacher is Professor Sybill Trelawney. She starts telling them about the Inner Eye, the ability to penetrate the mysteries of the future. This term, they will be learning to read tea leaves, next term they will start palmistry. Later on, they will progress to fire-omens and the crystall ball. She scares them with all kind of warnings and events, regarding the future. She tells Lavender Brown that the thing she is dreading will happen of Friday, the sixteenth of October. They start reading tea leaves and interpret them using their book Unfogging the Future. Professor Trelawney interrupts Ron and Harry, predicting terrible things to Harry from his tea cup. She says Harry has the Grim, the giant, spectral dog that haunts churchyards; an omen of death. Harry remembers the dog on the cover of Death Omens in Flourish and Blotts and the dog in Magnolia Crescent. The whole class is upset by the prediction of Harry’s death.
- Next lesson is Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall. She is telling them about Animagi, wizards who can transform at will into animals, and she transforms into a tabby cat to show them, but stops abrubtly, asking what is wrong with them, showing no attention at all. Hermione tells what happened at divination. Professor McGonagall tells them that Professor Trelawney predicts the death of a student every year, but none of them has died yet. She also questions her ability, saying that true Seers are very rare…. Most students feel a bit relieved by her words.
- Ron is still upset. After asking Harry if he did see a great black dog, Harry confirming, he tells them that his uncle Bilius once saw one and died twenty-four hours later.
- In the afternoon they have their first Care of Magical Creatures class, taught by Hagrid. Hagrid tells them to open their books, but everybody seems to have sealed their copy of The Monster Book of Monsters with ropes. Hagrid showed them they could open them by stroking them. Next he show them Hippogriffs, creatures with the body, hind legs and tail of a horse, but with the front legs, wings and head of a giant eagle. The way to deal with them is to never insult them; bow to them and if they bow back you are allowed to touch them. Harry volunteers to try first with a Hippogriff called Buckbeak. He bows, it bows back and Hagrid has Harry ride it. After flying around the paddock once they head back to the ground. Next the rest of the class does the same.
- Malfoy insults Buckbeak and is attacked by it. He has to go to the Hospital wing to have his arm taken care of.
- At night, Harry, Ron and Hermione go and see Hagrid again. Hagrid reckons he will be fired soon. The school governors have been told and they reckon he should have started smaller, with Flobberworms or something similar. Next he takes them back to the castle, telling them off for wandering around after dark
- Malfoy does not show up for classes until the next Potions class with Professor Snape. In this class they learn how to make a Shrinking Solution. Draco pretends he cannot use his arm to cut his ingredients and Ron is ordered by Snape to do it for him. Harry is then ordered to skin Draco’s Shrivelfig.
- Neville’s potion has gone wrong, turning orange instead of green.
- Seamus Finnigan tells Harry that Black has been spotted not far from Hogwarts, according to the Daily Prophet. Draco, overhearing their conversation, starts criticising Harry, saying that if he were in his place, he would go after Black himself. Harry doesn’t understand what he is insinuating.
- Snape tests Neville’s potion on his toad Trevor. Neville’s shrinking potion worked, as he had help from Hermione fixing it.
- After classes Harry and Ron notice that one moment Hermione’s right behind them, some seconds later she is way behind them.
- Next they have Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Lupin. He takes them along the corridors. In one of the corridors, Peeves is putting gum in Mr. Filch’s broomcloset. After warning Peeves to take it out, Peeves refuses. Lupin charms the gum out into Peeves’ nose with a ¤ Waddiwasi charm.
- He leads them to the staff-room. Inside the wardrobe there’s a Boggart. Boggarts are creatures who like dark, enclosed spaces. They’re shape-shifters who can take the shape of whatever they think will frighten people most. The charm that repels a Boggart is laughter, accompanied by Riddikulus. Neville is the first one to confront the Boggart, which turns itself into Professor Snape at seeing Neville. Neville charms it into his grandmother’s clothes. The Boggart continues to the next person, and so on. The Boggart turns into a mummy at confronting Parvati Patil, into a Banshee confronting Seamus Finnigan, into a rat, into a rattlesnake, into a bloody eyeball, into a severed hand confronting Dean Thomas and into a Spider confronting Ron. As it is about to confront Harry, Lupin hurries forward and it turns into a silvery white orb. It turns into Snape again and Neville finishes the Boggart off. Harry and Hermione hadn’t confronted the Boggart
- In no time at all, Defense Against the Dark Arts becomes everyone’s favourite class. After Boggarts, they studied Red Caps, little Goblin-like creatures and Kappas, water-dwellers that look like scaly monkeys.
- Professor Snape is giving them a hard time. Harry is not fond of Professor Trelawney’s classes, Parvati Patil and Lavender Brown loved her classes more then anyone. In Hagrid’s classes they now were only spending their lessons looking after Flobberworms.
- There’s one thing to look forward to, Quidditch is about to start again. Oliver Wood is telling the team it will be his last year, his last chance to win the Quidditch Cup.
- After returning from Quidditch practice one day, Harry hears that first Hogsmeade weekend will be at Halloween. Fred is happy; he needs to visit Zonko’s cause he’s nearly out of Stink Pellets. Harry will not be allowed to go, since he has no written permission.
- Crookshanks attacks Scabbers again, who hides beneath an old chest of drawers.
- After the next Transfiguration lesson, Harry plans to ask Professor McGonagall if he can go to Hogsmeade anyway. Before class starts, Lavender Brown is crying outside the classroom. Her rabbit was killed by a fox and today is the sixteenth of October. She thinks this was what Professor Trelawney predicted. After Transfiguration class, Professor asks the students to hand in their written permission. Neville forgot his, but appearantly his grandmother sent it directly to Professor McGonagall. Harry asks her if he can go anyway without the written permission but the answer is no.
- On Halloween, after seeing the the other student off, Harry is asked by Colin Creevy why he’s not going. Harry tells him he needs to do some work in the library. Having told Colin this, he has no choice but to head back toward the common room. He runs into Filch who asks him why he’s not with the rest at Hogsmeade buying Stink Pellets, Belch Powder and Whizzing Worms. He sends him back to the common room. Harry wanders around a bit.
- He is suddenly called by Professor Lupin. Lupin shows Harry the Grindylow, a water demon, which has just arrived and will be used for next lessons. They start talking and Harry asks him why he didn’t let him confront the Boggart. Lupin explains he was afraid it would turn into Voldemort and that would scare the other students. Harry says it probably would have turned into a Dementor. Professor Snape comes in bringing a potion for Lupin.
- The rest of the class returns from Hogsmeade. Ron brings a lot of sweets for Harry and tells him they went to Dervish and Banges, Zonko’s, to the Three Broomsticks to drink Butterbeer and to many other places and that he thinks they saw an Ogre at the Three Broomsticks.
- At night there’s the Halloween dinner. After dinner they return back to the Gryffindor common room but cannot enter, as the Fat Lady has fled from her painting, which was slashed by someone. Professor Dumbledore is fetched. Peeves, who saw her running through paintings on the fourth floor, tells them that she said it was Sirius Black who did it.
- Dumbledore orders the whole castle to be searched, to see if Black is still around. The students have to sleep in the Great Hall.
- The next days, students keep speculating about how Black managed to get into Hogwarts. Sir Cadogan has been appointed to take the Fat Lady’s place for a while. Professor McGonagall has Harry’s Quidditch training sessions supervised by Madam Hooch.
- Wood announces to the team they will play Hufflepuff instead of Slytherin at next Quidditch match. Hufflepuff has a new captain and Seeker, Cedric Diggory. His name makes Angelina, Alicia and Katie giggle, as Cedrig is tall and good-looking.
- Harry is late for Defense Against the Dark Arts classes. Entering the classroom, he finds out Professor Snape is teaching. Snape starts with a subject from the end of their lesson-book; one which they’re not supposed to do yet. He teaches them about Werewolves. Snape criticises them for not knowing how to recognise one. Hermione, wanting to give the answer, is silenced by Snape. Ron abrubtly defies Snape and is given detention.
- The day of the Quidditch match against Hufflepuff arrives. Harry is up on his Nimbus Two Thousand, as the game starts. It is raining very hard. Wood calls a timeout. Harry complains he can’t see a thing through his glasses with this rain, and Hermione charms it with a Impervius, making it repel water. The game continues. Suddenly he sees the Black Dog again. Wood spots Cedric going for the Snitch and Harry goes after it also. While he is chasing the snitch, an eerie silence is falling across the stadium. An then a horribly familiar wave of cold sweeps over him. He looks down and sees at least a hundred Dementors below him. He hears a conversation and screaming inside his head … a woman pleading with a man not to kill Harry but her instead. Harry hears a shrill voice laughing, the woman screaming, and then he faints.
- Harry regains consiousness in the Hospital wing. Fred and George tell him what happened. Diggory got the snitch just after Harry fell; he didn’t realise what had happened. He even tried to call off the game, but they won fairly. Ron and Hermione tell him that when he fell, Dumbledore waved his wand to slow down his fall before he hit the ground and charmed the Dementors away. His Nimbus Two Thousand was blown away when he fell. After it hit the Whomping Willow, the Willow completely destroyed it
- Harry has to stay in the hospital wing the rest of the weekend. He is worried about having seen the Grim two times now. He also realises what the screaming voices inside his head were; the last moments of his mother’s life beforeLord Voldemort killed her.
- In the next Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, Professor Lupin teaches them about Hinkypunks, one-legged creatures who look like they are made of wisps of smoke. After classes, Lupin wants a word with Harry. He feels sorry for Harry having lost his broomstick. They planted the Whomping Willow the same year that Lupin came to Hogwarts. They used to play games trying to get close to the trunk untill a boy called Davey Gudgeon almost lost an eye. Lupin explains the Dementors affect Harry more then other people because he has horrors in his past that others do not. Dementors feed on people’s peace, hope and happiness, draining it out of them, untill their victim is reduced to something souless and evil. Harry asks Lupin to teach him how to fight the Dementors.
- Christmas is near, Professor Flitwick decorated his classroom with shimmering fairies. Ron and Hermione stay at Hogwarts during holiday. There will be one more Hogsmeade trip on the last weekend of term. Hermione is anxious to buy Toothflossing Stringmints for her parents at Honeydukes.
- Harry is not allowed to go and borrows a copy of Which Broomstick from Wood to pass some time reading. Since he had lost his broom, he had tried a Shooting Star, one of the school brooms. He definitely needed a new broom of his own.
- At the day of the Hogsmeade trip, Harry says goodbye to Ron and Hermione and starts to head back to Gryffindor tower when he is stopped by Fred and George. They give him an ‘early christmas present’. It looks like an old parchment. They explain that in their first year, after letting off a Dungbomb in the corridor, Filch caught them and took them to his office. After creating some diversion with another Dungbomb, they stole it from one of Filch’s filing cabinets drawers marked ‘Confiscated and Highly Dangerous’. They show Harry how it works. Lines and words begin to appear. On the parchment there’s written “Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. Purveyors of Aids to Magical Mischief-Makers are proud to present “The Marauder’s Map”. The map shows every detail of Hogwarts, including people in the castle and secret passages, some leading right into Hogsmeade. From the seven passages, Filch knows four. One is caved in. One has the Whomping Willow right over it’s entrance and one of them leads right into the cellar of Honeydukes.
- Harry decides to use the map to go to Hogsmeade. He enters the last passage through a statue of the one-eyed witch with a ¤ Dissendium. It is dark and he illuminates it with a ¤ Lumos. After a long time he reaches the end of the passage. Through a trapdoor he enters the cellar of Honeydukes. Somebody is coming down, being told to get another box of Jelly Slugs. Quickly Harry gets up the stairs into Honeydukes.
- The store is loaded with sweets; nougat, coconut ice, toffees, chocolates, Every Flavor Beans, Fizzing Whizzbees, Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum, Toothflossing Stringmints, Pepper Imps, Ice Mice, peppermint creames, sugar-spun quills and exploding bonbons. Harry goes to Hermione and Ron who are looking between sweets like lollipops and Cockroach Clusters to buy something for Harry. He tells them all about the Marauder’s Map. They discuss wether Harry should or should not be coming to Hogsmeade with Black being loose.
- Ron tells them about the time, when he was seven, Fred had given him an Acid Pop which burnt a hole through his tongue. They buy their sweets and leave, going to the Three Broomsticks next to have some Butterbeer.
- In the Three Broomsticks Madam Rosmerta is serving people. They go to sit in the back of the room and drink Butterbeer. Professor McGonagall, Professor Flitwick, Hagrid and Cornelius Fudge enter and walk towards them. Because they shouldn’t find out Harry is there, Hermione charms a christmas tree with a Mobiliarbus to move in front of them, blocking the view. The go and sit at the table next to theirs. Madam Rosmerta brings their drinks, a Gillywater for McGonagall, four mulled mead for Hagrid, a cherry syrup and soda with ice for Flitwick and a red currant rum for Fudge. They start talking about Black. Rosmerta tells them the Dementors searched her pub twice looking for Black.
- Harry hears McGonagall tell the others that Black and his father, James Potter, used to be inseparable, best friends. Sirius Black was best man when Harry’s parents, James and Lily, married. They even named him godfather to Harry. When You-Know-Who was after the Potters, Dumbledore told them to go into hiding. The Potters then used an immensly complex spell, the Fidelius Charm. Using this charm, the secret information of the whereabouts of the Potters would be hidden insde a person, the Secret-Keeper, and as long as the Secret-Keeper refuses to speak, Voldemort would never find the Potters. Black was chosen as Secret-Keeper. Dumbledore, who was suspecting there was a traitor amongst them, even offered to be Secret-Keeper himself. But James Potter insisted on using Black. A week after the Fidelius Charm had been performed, his parents were betrayed. They were then found and killed by Voldemort.
- Hagrid remembers taking Harry from the ruins of the house, just after Harry’s parents were killed. Sirius Black turned up a bit later on his flying motorbike. Hagrid hadn’t known Black was the traitor. Fortunately he had orders from Dumbledore to bring Harry to the Dursleys when Black offered to look after Harry. The day after his parents death, Black killed Pettigrew, who was their friend and wanted revenge for killing James Potter. They all felt sorry for Pettigrew. Fudge says that only a trained Hit Wizard from the Magical Law Enforcement Squad would have stood a chance against Black. He was Junior Minister at that time in the Department of Magical Catastrophes and one of the first ones on the scene after Black murdered all these people in his fight with Pettigrew. Black was arrested and sent to Azkaban; Pettigrew received the Order of Merlin, First Class. Fudge tells the others that when he met with Black in Azkaban, he seemed very calm.
- The teachers leave, Harry is in shock from everything he has found out
- Although in shock, somehow Harry had manages to get back through the tunnel to Hogwarts. He goes straight to his room to look for pictures with Black in the photo album he got from Hagrid with pictures of his parents. He feels a undescribable hatred for Black.
- Having been unable to get to sleep, next day he finds out it’s the first day of holiday. Ron and Hermione warn Harry not to go after Black himself. Harry tells them about how he hears his mother die every time a Dementor is near. But Ron and Hermione insist Black is too dangerous to go after himself. The only thing they found that belonged to Pettigrew was a finger.
- They decide to visit Hagrid. Hagrid is in tears. He got a letter saying Buckbeak the Hippogriff will have to be taken to the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. Hagrid says it will be executed by the gargoyles at the Committee if he loses the case. The three offer to help in Buckbeaks defense.
- In the library they do some research about accused Hippogriffs. There’s some information about a Hippogriff that was convicted and about a Manticore that was let off, but they do not find any substantial help yet.
- On Christmas morning Harry receives presents. A jumper, mince pies, christmas cake and nut brittle from Mrs. Weasley. He also gets a present from an anonymous donoe; a brand new broom, a Firebolt. They speculate about who might have given it to Harry. Hermione enters, she’s suspicious about the donator of the Firebolt. Crookshanks tries to catch Scabbers again. Harry’s Sneakoscope starts whirling.
- There’s lunch in the Great Hall. All the teachers and the few students sit at the same table. When finishing dinner, Harry and Ron leave while Hermione has a short word with Professor McGonagall.
- They go back to their common room through the portrait hole with the password “Scurvy cur”. As they are admiring the Firebolt, Professor McGonagall comes in. She confiscates the Firebolt to have it examined for jinxes. Hermione had told McGonagall about the broom because she suspected it was sent by Black
- Harry and Ron are angry at Hermione. Wood seeks Harry to find out if he will be able to play in the next game.
- Harry has his first Anti-Dementor lesson from Professor Lupin. Lupin uses a Boggart which will turn into a Dementor. He teaches Harry the Patronus Charm, ¤ Expecto Patronum. A Patronus is a type of guardian which will act as a shield between him and the Dementor. Harry tries it on the Boggart, shape-shifted as a Dementor. Inside his head, he hears the last moments of his mother’s life again. He loses consiousness and regains it again, Lupin giving him Chocolate Frogs. He tries again, this time he hears his father also. Lupin tells Harry he used to be friends with his father. Harry has another go and this time he’s able to keep stand up to the Dementor. Lupin charms it with a ¤ Riddikulus and puts the Boggart back into a packing case.
- Slytherin had beaten Ravenclaw at Quidditch, meaning Gryffindor still has a good shot at the Cup. Wood increases the team practices. Besides his Anti-Dementor lessons, Harry has little time left for homework. Hermione also seems to be strained by all the classes she’s taking. Ron wonders how she has manages to attend all of her classes. He had heard her talking to Arithmancy Professor Vector about yesterday’s lesson, but could not understand how she could have been there because she was with them in Care of Magical Creatures class. In addition to that, Ernie McMillan had told him that hermione never missed a Muggle Studies class, although most of these classes are at the same time.
- Time passes and Harry still hasn’t got his broom back. He is told it has been tested for the usual curses but it still has to be cleared for a Hurling Hex.
- Anti-Dementor lessons have not shown much more progress. Lupin tells Harry about the Dementors’ Kiss which they use to suck out the soul of a person. He tells Harry that this will be Black’s fate when he is caught, as the Dementors have been given permision by the Ministry.
- Harry get’s his broom back from Professor McGonagall. Together with Ron he sets off to the common room to make up with Hermione. Neville is at the entrance. He lost the passwords after having written them down not to forget them. Harry says the password “Oddsbodikins” and they enter the common room. Everybody has gathered to admire his new broom. After a while, Ron offers to take it upstairs. While Harry is talking with Hermione, there’s a yell and Ron comes down. Holding a bloodstained sheet, he tells them Scabbers is gone and he found ginger cat hairs in his room
- Ron and Hermione are enraged with each other. Harry has his final practice before the match against Ravenclaw. Madam Hooch checks out his Firebolt, comparing it to the Nimbus series, the Cleansweeps and Silver Arrows. Oliver Wood gathers the team for instructions. He tells them Ravenclaw has a new Seeker, it’s a fourth-year named Cho Chang. She rides a Comet Two Sixty. After the training session, Ron has a go on the Firebolt. When they finish they head toward the castle. Harry suddenly sees a pair of eyes in the darkness and lights his wand with a Lumos, to find out it’s Crookshanks.
- The next day at breakfast the whole school admires his new broom. Today is the match against Ravenclaw
- The game starts. Lee Jordan starts his commentary on the game, saying that according to Which Broomstick the Firebolt will be the broom of choice for the national teams at this year’s World Championship. Cho is tailing Harry. Harry sees the Snitch, goes after it, but is diverted by a Bludger. He sees it again but it vanishes quickly. The snitch appears a third time. As Harry goes after it, there appear three Dementors on the ground and Harry uses the Expecto Patronum, his wand conjures up an enormous silvery white something. He catches the snitch.
- It turns out Draco, Crabbe and Goyle disguised themselves as Dementors to make Harry loose the game. They get punished for this by Professor McGonagall.
- Gryffindor celebrates their victory. Only Hermione isn’t joining them, reading Home Life and Social Habits of British Muggles alone in a corner. Ron and Hermione are still angry at each other.
- Everyone goes to sleep. Harry is awakened by a scream. Ron tells them he saw Sirius Black in their room with a knife. Sir Cadogan, who temporarily guards the entrance, confirms he let a man enter Gryffindor Tower because the man had the password. Neville confesses he lost the passwords which he had written down on paper
- The castle is searched again. Filch is boarding up every hole and crack. Sir Cadogan is sacked and the Fat Lady is back. Neville is punished heavily, he even get’s a Howler from his grandmother.
- Hagrid invites Ron and Harry to visit him in the evening. He tells them that Buckbeak’s case is next friday and that Hermione has been visiting him lately because she is unhappy.
- There is another Hogsmeade trip and Harry decides to go, taking his Invisibility cloak and the Marauder’s Map. With a Dissendium he opens the passage of the Statue of the one-eyed witch and shoves his bag through. At that moment Neville comes around the corner. Snape turns up and tells them to leave. He manages to shake Neville off and finally go through the tunnel to Hogsmeade.
- He finds Ron. Harry is wearing his invisibility cloak. They visit the Post Office where Harry admires the hundreds of owls, from Great Greys to tiny little Scops owls. Next they visit Zonko’s. They buy Dungbombs, Hiccough Sweets, Frog Spawn Soap and a Nose-Biting Teacup.
- When they go to see the Shrieking Shack, Draco, Crabbe and Goyle turn up. Being invisible, Harry throws mud at them. When stumbling, Crabbe’s foot catches the hem of Harry’s cloak and for a split second his face is visible. Draco, Crabbe an Goyle flee.
- Afraid that Malfoy will tell a teacher, Harry speeds back through the tunnel to Hogwarts. He hides his cloak in a shadowy corner in the tunnel. Just as he gets through the statue of the one-eyed witch, Snape walks in and takes Harry to his office.
- Snape tries to provoke Harry into confessing he was at Hogsmeade. He says bad things about Harry’s father and Harry tells him to shut up about him. Harry mentions that Dumbledore told him that his father saved Snape’s life. Snape tells Harry it was no act of heroism but rather a matter of saving his own skin as much as Snape’s. Harry is told to empty his pockets. It’s full of Zonko’s tricks and the Marauder’s Map. Although the map looks like an empty piece of parchment, Snape suspects there’s more to it. He tries to put a charm on it to make it show something and commands it to yield the information it conceals with his wand. The map starts insulting Snape. He throws a fistful of powder into the flames of the fireplace and calls for Lupin. Lupin steps out of the fireplace. Snape shows him the map. Lupin presumes it’s not full of Dark Magic but simply a piece of parchment that insults people, probably bought in a joke-shop. Ron rushes in and states he bought it in Zonko’s and gave it to Harry. Lupin takes Harry and Ron away.
- Lupin knows the parchment is a map. He also knows the creators of the map.
- On their way back to Gryffindor Tower, Harry and Ron run into Hermione. She shows them a letter stating that Buckbeak is to be execute
- Hermione got the letter, stating Buckbeak will be executed, from Hagrid. Ron and Hermione make up.
- Harry, Ron and Hermione have Charms class where they practice Cheering Charms. Hermione somehow vanished and did not attend the class. After classes, Harry and Ron go back to Gryffindor tower. They pass the security Trolls, give the Fat Lady the password “Flibbertigibbet” and enter through the portrait hole. Hermione is sitting at a table, asleep. She had forgotten to go to Charms class.
- The three of them have Divination together and they go to Professor Trelawney’s room. They have moved up to the crystal ball lessons. They all look into their Orbs. After a while they get bored and Ron makes a funny comment. Professor Trewlawney looks into Harry’s orb and she sees the Grim again. Hermione decides she has enough of it and leaves classes.
- Easter holiday has started, but the third-years have a lot of homework. Hermione looks very tired. Ron has taken over the responsibility for Buckbeak’s appeal, now consulting books like The Handbook of Hippogriff Psychology and Fowl or Foul? A Study of Hippogriff Brutality.
- The Quidditch final between Gryffindor and Slytherin is near. Gryffindor hasn’t won the Cup since Charlie Weasley had been Seeker. The night before the game Harry sleeps badly, waking up after having strange dreams. Looking out of the window, he sees Crookshanks and a huge Black Dog.
- The day of the Quidditch match has arrived. Harry and the team get ready to enter the field. Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff are supporting Gryffindor; not wanting Slytherin to win. The game starts, with Lee Jordan doing the commentary. There is a lot of action from Gryffindor’s Chaser, Alicia Spinnet, Slytherin’s Chasers Warrington, Montague and Flint. Flint smashes into Angelina Johnson and Fred takes revenge by beating him on the head with his club. Alicia scores a penalty they got for Flint’s behavior and Oliver Wood stops the penalty that Slytherin gets for Fred’s foul. More actions follow, also by Katie Bell. Harry sees the Snitch but imediately starts to distract Draco Malfoy’s attention because Gryffindor needs to be fifty points ahead when catching the snitch in order to win the Cup. While flying in a different direction, Malfoy tailing him, he is attacked by the Bludgers which the Slytherin Beaters Derrick and Bole are aiming at him. The game turns very dirty but Gryffindor manages to get sixty points ahead. Harry sees the Snitch and goes after it, but Malfoy holds on to Harry’s broom so Harry misses it by a short distance. He finally manages to catch the Snitch right in front of Malfoy’s nose and the stadium explodes with cheers.
- Exams are near. Everybody is studying hard. Even Fred and George are studying, as they are about to take their O.W.L.s. Percy is getting ready for his N.E.W.Ts (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests). He hopes to enter the Ministry of Magic, so he needs top grades.
- Hermione looks completely exhausted. Her exam timetable shows various exams at the same time. Ron asks how she plans to do that but she does not answer the question; asking instead if either of them has seen her copy of Numerology and Grammatica.
- Exams start. For Charms exam they need to perform a Cheering Charm. Care of Magical Creatures exam is easy but Potions is difficult. Harry has problems with his Confusing Concoction. Then they have exams in Astronomy, Herbology and Defense against the Dark Arts.
- Cornelius Fudge has come to Hogwarts to serve as a witness to the possible execution of Buckbeak by the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. Two other members of the Committee arrive.
- Harry has his last exam, Divination. The students have to go to Professor Trelawney’s room seperately. Ron goes first. After about twenty minutes it is Harry’s turn. Harry makes up a bogus story. He says he sees a Hippogriff in the Orb. While Trelawney asks Harry questions about it, she suddenly starts talking in a harsh voice, her eyes unfocused and her mouth sagging. She’s saying ‘It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his mster. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant’s aid, greater and more terrible then ever before. Tonight … before midnight … the servant … will set out … to rejoin … his master …’ After this, she snaps up again and does not remember anything she has said.
- Back in Gryffindor Tower, Harry hears that Hagrid has sent a note saying Buckbeak has lost the appeal and will be executed at sunset, and that he does not want to talk to anybody. Hermione fetches the Invisibility cloak, wanting to go and talk to Hagrid. Harry, Ron and Hermione go under the cloak together to Hagrid’s cabin. Hagrid looks like a beaten man. He tells them that not even Dumbledore can overrule the Committee’s decision. The executioner, Macnair, is an old pal of Malfoy’s. About to go back to the castle, Hermione suddenly finds Scabbers in Hagrids milk bottle. Outside, a group of people are coming. The three go out the back door. As they leave towards the castle they hear the swish and thud of an axe.
- Harry, Ron and Hermione hear a howl coming from Hagrid. For some reason, Scabbers is going berserk in Ron’s pocket. Harry sees the reason; Crookshanks is approaching them. Scabbers escapes from Ron’s hands and flees, Crookshanks going after it. Harry, Ron and Hermione follow them. Ron manages to catch Scabbers again.
- Suddenly a black Dog attacks them, jumping on Harry and rolling off og him. When attacking a second time, Ron pushes Harry aside and is caught by the dog and dragged away. Harry is hit by something. In the dark he lights the scene with a Lumos and sees the Whomping Willow swinging it’s branches at them. The dog drags Ron into a large gap in the base of the trunk of the Whomping Willow. Ron’s leg is broken while struggling to keep from being pulled in.
- Crookshanks calms the Whomping Willow by placing his paws on a knot on the trunk. They enter the gap into a long tunnel. The tunnel leads far down into a room and Hermione realises it’s the Shrieking Shack. They follow the trail of something being dragged and end up in a room where they find Ron.
- It’s a trap. The dog in fact is an Animagus. It is Sirius Black, closing the door behind them. With a Expelliarmus he disarms Harry and Hermione. Harry, loaded with hate for Black, lunges at him. A struggle follows. Harry manages to get hold on his wand. Ron and Hermione who are still struggling with Black are told by Harry to get out of the way, and they step aside. On the verge of killing Black, Crookshanks leaps onto Black’s chest protecting him. Someone is coming, they hear footsteps. It is Lupin. Entering the room he disarms Harry and Hermione with a Expelliarmus. Lupin then asks “Where is he, Sirius?”. Harry is confused. Lupin seems to suddenly have some insight, asking half-questions to Black. Black appears to confirm with a nod. Lupin helps Black to his feet. Lupin wants to explain but Harry and Hermione are too angry at this apparent betrayal to listen to him. Hermione yells out that she knows Lupin is a Werewolf. She has known ever since Snape had them write an essay about Werewolves. Lupin starts to explain that he knew where Black was because he saw him on the Marauder’s Map. He is Moony, one othe the creators of the map. Moony is his nickname from his student days at Hogwarts. He figured they would sneak out to visit Hagrid and the invisibility cloak does not prevent them from showing up in the Marauder’s Map. When he saw them leave from Hagrid’s cabin on the Map, they were accompanied by someone. Acording to the map, two people were dragged into the Whomping Willow’s. He explains to them that Scabbers is not a rat, but a wizard. Scabbers is actually Peter Pettigrew.
- Black tells them he meant to kill Peter Pettigrew twelve years ago but did not manage to do it. He tries to take Scabbers from Ron. Lupin stops him, telling him they need to explain everything first since Harry, Ron and Hermione have the right to know everything. Peter Pettigrew is an unregistered Animagus, one of three which used to be students together at Hogwarts. Lupin was bitten as a child by a Werewolf. The potion which Professor Snape has been making for him, the Wolfsbane Potion, keeps Lupin’s mind stable when he is transformed so that he can simply wait for it to pass. Dumbledore knew about Lupin’s state. He had the Whomping Willow planted the year Lupin attended Hogwarts. The Shrieking Shack was built as a place for protection when he was transformed. Black, Pettigrew and James Potter, his best friends, found out and became Animagi to keep him company during his time as a Werewolf. They created the Marauder’s Map. Sirius’ knickname was Padfoot, Peter’s was Wormtail, James’ was Prongs and Lupin’s nickname is Moony. Because of his gratitude toward Dumbledore, Lupin never had the courage to tell him that Sirius is an animagus.
- When they were students on Hogwarts, Sirius played a trick on Snape. Since Snape was very curious about the four’s whereabouts, Sirius told Snape how to enter the Whomping Willow when Lupin was being led to the tunnel by Madam Pomfrey. To save Snape from meeting with a fully grown Werewolf, James Potter pulled snape back at great risk to his own life. Snape however saw Lupin as a Werewolf but was forbidden to talk about it by Dumbledore.
- At that moment Snape appears from under Harry’s invisibility cloak.
- Snape has found Harry’s cloak at the base of the Whomping Willow. He accuses Lupin of helping Black. He charms some cords which tie themselves around Lupin. He commands all of them to leave towards Hogwarts.
- Harry opposes him. At the same moment, Harry, Ron and Hermione disarm him with a Expelliarmus, Snape is knocked out from the blow. Black unties Lupin.
- Black had recognised Scabbers as Pettigrew when he saw the photo of the Weasleys in Egypt in the Daily Prophet. The rat is missing one toe and they only found one finger of Pettigrew’s after the blast. Crookshanks has been helping Black to find and capture Scabbers. According to Lupin and Black, it was Pettigrew who betrayed his parents. Twelve years ago, at the last moment, Black decided that Pettigrew should be their Secret-Keeper since nobody would expect they would use a weak wizard like him. This decision cost Harry’s parents their lives.
- Lupin and Black transform Scabbers back into Pettigrew by magic. Pettigrew has in fact been hiding all these years, waiting to see if Voldemort would return.
- Black tells he has been able to escape from Azkaban only because he knew he was innocent. This wasn’t a happy thought so the Dementors couldn’t suck it out of him, but it kept him sane; helped him keep his powers. He could still transform into a dog and managed to escape that way, as Dementor’s have much more trouble’s sensing animal emotions.
- Lupin and Black decide to kill Pettigrew. Harry stops them. He wants Pettigrew to be handed over to the Dementors, and his life is spared by Harry’s decision.
- Lupin straps Ron’s leg with the charm ¤ Ferula. Snape is still out cold and they use a Mobilicorpus charm to take him with them. Appearing as though invisible strings were tied to his wrist, neck and knees, he is pulled into a standing position like a puppet.
- Harry, Lupin, Black, Ron, Hermione, the unconsious Snape and the chained Pettigrew set out toward the castle. Sirius asks Harry if, since he is his godfather, would he like to live with him? Harry is filled with happiness, gladly accepting the offer.
- When they are almost at the castle, Lupin, who had forgotten to take his potion, transforms into a Werewolf. In the sudden panic, Black transforms into his Dog shape to protect them. Pettigrew dives for Lupin’s dropped wand and takes out Ron. Harry disarms him with a Expelliarmus, but Pettigrew escapes after he transforms back into a rat.
- Ron is unconscious. They hear Black yelp and then moan from the direction of the lake. Harry and Hermione speed in the direction and see at least a hundred Dementors gliding towards them. Thinking of the prospect of living with his godfather, Harry manages to charm a Patronus with a Expecto Patronum charm, the Dementor’s seem for a short moment not to be able to walk through the silver mist but in the end they are approaching closer and closer. One Dementor lowers his hood to perform the Dementors’ Kiss and Harry sees its face. His Patronus flickers and dies. In the distance he hears someone screaming the Patronus Charm also. The Dementor, about to perform the ‘kiss’, picks up Harry’s head to his face.
- He sees a silvery ligth growing brighter, it drives the Dementors back. Through his eyes blurred with sweat he can make out the patronus is as bright as a Unicorn. It goes back to its conjurer and Harry seems to recognise him. Then he loses consciousness.
- Harry regains cosciousness and hears the Minister of Magic, Fudge, talk to Snape, telling him he will receive the Order of Merlin first or second class for his actions. Asking about the cut he has, Snape says that Harry, Ron and Hermione did it, under the influence of a Confundus Charm by Black. Snape starts telling Fudge that the three, especialy Harry, should be handled much more strictly. Snape had bound and gagged Black when he found them and took Harry, Ron and Hermione straight back to the castle.
- They are in the Hospital wing. Madam Pomfrey, who is checking to see if they are alright, tells them that the Dementors will be performing the Kiss any moment now. Harry, in panic, starts telling them that Black is innocent, but they refuse to listen.
- Dumbledore enters the room. He talks to Harry and Hermione in private. Dumbledore believes their story but they have no proof and Snape’s version is far more convincing. There’s nothing he can do. What they need, he says, ‘is more time’. He starts hinting what to do next to Hermione. Hermione understands and takes a tiny hour-glass on a chain and puts it around their necks together after Dumbledore leaves. She turns it and they go back in time.
- Hermione explains that she got the Time-Turner from Professor McGonagall to be able to take many of her classes which were scheduled at the same time.
- Because Dumbledore said they would save more then one innocent life, they guess they’re supposed to save Buckbeak’s life and free Sirius from Flitwick’s office where he is locked up. They see themselves going to Hagrid’s cabin under the invisibility cloak earlier that night, and decide to run straight into the Forbidden Forest on the other side of Hagrid’s cabin.
- Next they see themselves entering Hagrid’s cabin earlier that night and head toward the Hippogriff. Fudge, Macnair, Dumbledore and the other Committee member are coming. While they read the official notice of execution to Hagrid, they free Buckbeak and head back to the trees. They see the event earlier, when Sirius, as a black dog, caught Ron and dragged him into the Whomping Willow. A while later, Lupin enters the tree, and some time later Snape enters.
- Hermione wonders why the Dementors didn’t take Sirius earlier and Harry says that someone must have conjured a real Patronus. Harry thinks it was his father.
- They see themselves come out of the Whomping Willow and see the other events of earlier that evening. Since Lupin will head to the forest as a werewolf, they move away from their spot into Hagrid’s cabin. He sees the Dementors at the lake and runs over to get a glimpse of whoever conjured the Patronus. Nobody appears and then he realises it was he; he had seen himself at the other side of the lake. He speeds from behind the bush and conjures a Patronus with his wand, yelling the Expecto Patronum charm. The Patronus is a stag, and Harry realises… “Prongs”... he whispers. and then it vanishes.
- They see Snape taking them to the castle earlier that night.
- They wait for a while. They see Macnair go out of the castle to get the Dementors. On Buckbeak’s back they fly to the window of the room where Sirius is held. Hermione opens the window with a Alohomora and they take him up on top of the tower. Sirius takes off with Buckbeak.
- Harry and Hermione have ten minutes to get back to the hospital wing without beeing seen. Fudge and Snape are walking through the corridor talking.
- Harry and Hermione wait till they have passed and then continue. They are delayed a bit to avoid Peeves. They reach the Hospital wing. Dumbledore leaves the room and sees them coming. He asks if they managed their task and they confirm. He locks them back into the room.
- Madam Pomfrey comes back to take care of them. They hear loud voices. It has been learned that Sirius has escaped. Fudge, Snape and Dumbledore enter. Snape starts accusing Harry of being involved in Sirius’ escape. Dumbledore denies this fact since ‘Harry and Hermione have been locked up for the last ten minutes and have not left the room’.
- Ron wakes up and they explain everything that has happened.
- Lupin quits his job as a teacher. Harry goes to see him. Since Snape told everybody Lupin is a Werewolf, and the parents of the students are not likely to approve of him remaining, Lupin thinks it is better to leave. He gives Harry back his Invisibility cloak and the Marauder’s Map.
- Dumbledore enters and Lupin leaves. Harry tells Dumbledore about Professor Trelawneys prediction. Dumbledore tells Harry that Pettigrew now owes his life to him.
- Harry, Ron and Hermione pass all their exams.
- Hermione won’t take Muggle Studies and Divination nor use the Time-Turner anymore as it is too exhausting.
- Ron asks if Harry would like to come to the World Championship with them in the coming summer holiday. Harry says he would like to.
- During the ride back in the Hogwarts Express Harry receives an owl-message from Sirius, telling he is in hiding and that it was he who had sent him the Firebolt. He also gives Harry written permission, as his godfather, to visit Hogsmeade. The letter goes on to say that Ron can keep the owl.
- Arriving at the station, the Dursleys are already waiting. Uncle Vernon asks what the letter is, and Harry happily tells him that it is from his godfather, continuing, ‘he was his parents best friend. He’s a convicted murderer, but he’s broken out of wizard prison and he’s on the run. He likes to keep in touch with him, though … keep up with his news … check if he’s happy …’
