Shortnend: Book 4

Chapter 1 The Riddle House

  • The Riddle family lived in Little Hangleton. Their house is still called ‘The Riddle House’. The story goes that fifty years before, the maid came down to the village one day, screaming. She had found all three Riddles dead; their eyes wide open and cold as ice. In the pub, The Hanged Man, it is rumoured that the Riddle’s gardener Frank Bryce has been arrested.
  • The following morning, Frank is being questioned by the police of Great Hangleton. He insist he’s innocent, and that the only peron he saw near the house on the day of the Riddles’ deaths was a pale, dark-haired teenage boy. The report on the Riddles’ death showed they had all appeared in perfect health, although they were dead. It seemed they had been frightened to death. The bodies are buried in Little Hangleton’s churchyard.
  • Frank stays to live in the Riddle House. One day he wakes up from the pain in his bad leg and sees lights in the Riddle House. He goes over to check if some of the town boys have broken into the house. In the house, a man with a cold high-pitched voice talks to a man called Wormtail.
  • The cold voice asks where Nagini is. She has to be milked, he needs feeding since the journey tired him. They’ll stay a week or longer, at least untill the Quidditch World Cup is over. Wormtail suggests “it could be done without Harry Potter” but the cold voice says he will use no other and warns Wormtail to have courage or feel the wrath of Lord Voldemort. Wormtail, in panic, warns that Bertha Jorkins’s disapearance will not go unnoticed for long, but is told Bertha Jorkins had to be killed. The cold voice says he hears Nagini and starts hissing and spitting. Frank hears movement behind him and sees a gigantic snake coming and entering the room. It seemed as if the cold voice could talk to snakes. Frank is discovered and told to enter the room. The cold voice tells Wormtail to turn his chair to face Frank. Wormtail does. Frank screams, there’s a flash of green light, a rushing sound, and Frank Bryce collapses. He is dead before he hits the floor.
  • Two hundred miles away, Harry wakes up with a start from his nightmare
Chapter 2 The scar
  • Harry wakes up from his vivid dream, in pain from his burning scar. He tries to recall his dream, remembering Wormtail and Lord Voldemort and another person. He tries to distract his mind with Flying with the Cannons but even that doesn’t work.
  • He doesn’t know who to tell about what happened. Hermione would tell him to go straight to Dumbledore and consult a book like Common Magical Ailments and Afflictions. Sudenly he knows who to consult. He writes a letter to Sirius.
Chapter 3 The Invitation
  • The next morning Dudley, Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia are already around the kitchen table. Dudley is on a diet regime. The Dursleys received a letter from the Weasley family, asking if Harry can go to the Quidditch World Cup with them. Harry just has to casually mention the word ‘godfather’ and he is allowed to go.
  • He goes up to his room, where Errol has just arrived with Pig, Ron’s new owl. The owl has brought a letter from Ron stating when they will pick up Harry, if he can come. The letter also states that Percy has started working in the Department of International Magical Co-operation. He sends a note back to Ron and a letter to Sirius.
Chapter 4 Back to The Burrow
  • The next day, Harry packs his trunk and is set to go.
  • The Weasleys are late. Suddenly there’s bangings and scrapings from the fireplace. They can hear the voices of Fred, George, Mr. Weasley and Ron behind the blocked fireplace. Harry realises they have traveled here by using Floo Powder. Mr Weasley blows up the fake coal fire which traps them. He appologises for the mess and explains he had their fireplace temporarily connected to the Floo Network by a contact at the Floo Regulation Panel. He promises he’ll just light a fire to send the boys back and then he’ll repair the fireplace before he Disapparates.
  • George and Fred get Harry’s trunk. Dudley comes back into the room. Mr. Weasley lights the fireplace with an Incendio to send the boys back. Fred drops his sweets before leaving, picks them up again, and departs again with Floo Powder saying “The Burrow” while stepping in the fireplace. Next, George leaves, taking Harry’s trunk. Ron goes after George. Before Harry and Mr. Weasley can leave, they find out that Dudley found one of Fred’s sweets and has eaten it. His tongue is swelling up immensely. Mr. Weasley sends Harry back and stays to fix the situation.
Chapter 5 Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes
  • Harry arrives at the Weasley’s house, the Burrow. Fred asks if Dudley ate the Ton-Tongue Toffee. Besides Fred, Ron, George, Bill and Charlie are there. Out of thin air Mr. Weasley appears and tells Fred his stunt wasn’t funny.
  • Mrs. Weasley also enters the kitchen, followed by Ginny and Hermione. Mrs. Weasley has overheard Mr. Weasey scold Fred and asks if it has anything to to do with Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. Ron explains this is the ‘joke stuff’ that Fred and George are inventing to open a joke-shop.
  • While going to their room they run into Percy. He is complaining about the noise. He tells them he is working on a report to standardise cauldron thickness for the Department of International Magical Co-operation.
  • In their room, Harry sees pig again and Ron explains his real name is Pigwidgeon. Ron tells them that Percy is obsessed with his boss, Mr. Crouch.
  • After a while they go downstairs to help Mrs. Weasley with dinner. They’ll be eating outside. Hermione’s cat, Crookshanks, is chasing Gnomes in the garden. During dinner, Percy is talking about his work. He complains they are not getting the support they need from the Department of Magical Games and Sports and from Ludo Bagman. Mr. Weasley likes Ludo. He had gotten them the tickets for the Quidditch World Cup because he did a favor helping out his brother Otto Bagman. Percy thinks Mr. Crouch would never lose someone like Bertha Jorkins, who went to Albania on holiday. He criticises Bagman for not bothering to find out what happened to her. Percy mentions their Department has another event coming up after the World Cup; a top-secret one. The Weasleys speculate about who will win the Cup; Ireland has been great in the last games but the Bulgarian team has Viktor Krum.
  • Mrs. Weasley will get Harry’s school supplies the next day.
Chapter 6 The Portkey
  • The next morning, everybody wakes up early to go to the World Cup. Bill, Charlie and Percy will go by Apparating. Since the Department of Magical Transportation obliges you to pass a test, Harry, Ron, Fred, George, Ginny and Hermione cannot Apparate, so the will go to the Cup with Mr. Weasley by other means. Mr. Weasley tells them a pair of people splinched themselves once, while trying to apparate, leaving half of themselves behind! The Accidental Magic Reversal Department had to be called to sort them out.
  • Before they leave, Mrs. Weasley rids Fred and George of their remaining Ton-Tongue Toffees, which they were supposed to throw away, using a Summoning Charm, Accio.
  • Mr. Weasley explains they’ll use a Portkey, used to transport wizards from one spot to another at a prearranged time, to get to the Cup. The nearest one for them is at the top of Stoatshead Hill at the village of Ottery St. Catchpole.
  • They arrive on the spot and look for the Portkey. They meet with Amos Diggory and his son Cedric who already found the Portkey. Since the Lovegoods (1, 2) have been at the Cup for a week already and the Fawcetts couldn’t get tickets, they won’t have to wait for others.
  • The Portkey takes them to the Cup.
Chapter 7 Bagman and Crouch
  • Harry, Ron, Fred, George, Ginny, Hermione and Mr. Weasley arrive at the Quidditch World Cup area. They are welcomed by Basil from the Transportation Department. Basil warns them they had better get out of the way since there is a big party coming in from the Black Forest. He redirects them to their campsite. The site manager is Mr. Roberts. The Diggorys go to another field. Their camp manager is Mr Payne.
  • They go to their camp and meet with Mr. Roberts. Mr. Roberts, a muggle, thinks this is all really strange. A wizard appears behind him and puts a Memory Charm, ¤ Obliviate on him. The wizard tells Mr. Weasley that Mr. Roberts needs a Memory Charm ten times a day, and it’s not helping that Ludo Bagman has been talking in Quidditch terms all day. Bagman played Quidditch for England himself. He was the best Beater the Wimbourne Wasps ever had.
  • They arrive at their spot and set up the tent which Mr. Weasley borrowed from Perkins at the office. It is furnished exactly in the style as Mrs. Figg’s home. Harry, Ron and Hermione get water at the other end of the field. A tiny boy called Kevin is playing with his fathers wand. They see a banner on a tent which reads The Salem Witches’ Institute. They meet with Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas.
  • At the water tap there’s a waiting line. One of the wizards, Archie, is wearing a womans dress.
  • On the way back to the tent they also see Oliver Wood, who tells them he has been signed to the Puddlemere United reserve team, Ernie Macmillan and Cho Chang.
  • Many Ministry members pass by the tent, greeting Mr. Weasley. Among them Cuthbert Mockrigde, Head of the Goblin Liaison Office, Gilbert Wimple of the Committee on Experimental Charms, Arnold Peasegood, an Obliviator and member of the Accidental Magic Reversal Department, Bode and Croaker, who are Unspeakables from the Department of Mysteries.
  • Bill, Charlie and Percy arrive by Apparating.
  • While having lunch, Ludo Bagman visits them. Bagman tells them he takes bets from people. He already got Roddy Pontner betting that Bulgaria will score first, and Agatha Timms put up half shares in her eel farm. Mr. Weasley puts a Galleon on Ireland to win. Fred and George want to bet thirty-seven Galleons, fifteen Sickles and three Knuts and a fake wand, but Mr. Weasley prevents them from betting.
  • Bagman tells them that his Bulgarian opposite number’s making difficulties, but Mr. crouch will sort it out; he speaks about a hundred and fifty languages. Percy corrects him, saying he speaks over two hundred, Mermish and Gobbledegook and Troll…
  • Barty Crouch apparates. He tells Mr. Weasley that Ali Bashir wants to talk to him about the embargo on flying carpets. Mr. Weasly says that he explained to Bashir that flying carpets are defined as a Muggle Artifact by the Registry of Proscribed Charmable Objects. Mr. Crouch tells them he remembers his grandfather used to have an Axminster.
  • Bagman and Crouch leave.
  • At night, the area becomes crowded with salesmen. Harry buys three Omnioculars.
  • Green and red lanterns blaze into life in the trees, as the game is about to start.
Chapter 8 The Quidditch World Cup
  • Everybody walks through the woods toward the Cup stadiom where the Quidditch World Cup is about to start . It has Muggle-Repelling Charms all over it. They are led to the Top Box. Harry sees a gigantic blackboard with commercials for the Bluebottle, a broom with an Anti-Burglar Buzzer, Mrs. Skower’s All-Purpose Magical Mess Remover and Gladrags Wizardwear.
  • There is also a House-elf in the box. They learn that her name is Winky. She tells them that Dobby has gone ‘crazy’ after getting his freedom, wanting to be paid for work, and that Dobby should worry about ending up in front of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
  • Team mascots will precede the match. Cornelius Fudge, Minister of Magic arrives at the top box. Also Lucius Malfoy, Draco and Mrs. Malfoy appear and The Bulgarian Minister of Magic Mr. Oblansk. The Malfoys are guests of Mr. Fudge because they made a contribution to St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Finally, Ludo Bagman arrives to do the commentary. With a ¤ Sonorus he amplifies his voice.
  • The Bulgarian team mascots, Veela, appear, followed by the Irish mascots, Leprechauns.
  • The Bulgarian team players enter; Dimitrov, Ivanova, Zograf, Levski, Vulchanov, Volkov and Viktor Krum.
  • Next the Irish players enter; Connolly, Ryan, Troy, Mullet, Moran, Quigley and Lynch.
  • All Irish players have a Firebolt. The referee, acclaimed Chairwizard of the International Association of Quidditch, Hassan Mostafa from Egypt, enters. He kicks a crate open and the Quaffle, the two Bludgers and the Snitch fly out into the air. The Quidditch game begins.
  • Harry uses his Omnioculars to see the match better, reading comments like Hawkshead Attack Formation as the Irish Chasers zoom closely together and Porskoff Ploy. The Irish are scoring and increasing the lead. The Match becomes more brutal. The Bulgarian Beaters are whacking the Bludgers fiercely at the Irish Chasers. Both Seekers suddenly dive, but Krum is faking and pulls out of the dive just before the ground. Lynch however, hits the ground hard. Harry watches a review on his omnioculars in slow motion reading Krum doing the Wronski Feint. After a time out, the game starts again.
  • The Irish team increases their lead to one hundred and thirty points to ten. Bulgaria’s Keeper Zograf makes a foul and Ireland gets a penalty. Mostafa is enchanted by the Bulgarian Veela, and after he begins to feel normal he sends them away. The Bulgarian players protest and Mostafa gives two more penalties to Ireland. The game is getting uglier and many fouls are comitted. The Veela are angry at the Irish leprechauns and show their real nature. Their faces turn into cruel-beaked bird heads and long scaly wings burst from their shoulders. Krum gets hit in his face; his nose looks broken. Lynch spots the Snitch and goes after it, Krum following. Lynch crashes again. Krum catches the Snitch but Ireland wins. The game ends with with a score of one hundred and sixty points for Bulgaria and one hundred and seventy for Ireland.
  • Two ministry wizards bring the Cup into the Top Box and Fudge hands it over in the end-ceremony.
  • Bagman turns off his speakerphone voice with a Quietus. Fred and George had made a bet with Bagman that Krum would catch the snitch, but Ireland would win. They had won their bet.
Chapter 9 The Dark Mark
  • Everybody goes back to the tents. After some hot chocolate they go to bed.
  • Harry is woken by Mr. Weasley. He hears screams and people running. They get out of the tent. From a distance, Harry sees a crowd of masked wizards coming their way. High above them Mr. Roberts and three other people, which might be his wife and children, are hanging upside down in the air.
  • Mr. Weasley sends Harry, Ron, Hermione, Fred, George and Ginny into the woods while he, Bill, Charlie and Percy go and help the ministery confront the mob. When they get into the woods, Ron trips over a tree-root and Hermione makes some light with a ¤ Lumos. They run into Draco who tells them the crowd is after muggles so Hermione, who he calls a Mudblood, should run while she can.
  • Harry, Ron and Hermione have lost the others and they continue together into the woods.
  • They hear a girl talking French and Hermione presumes they’re from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. She read about it in Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe.
  • Harry finds out he has lost his Wand. They see Winky coming out of the bushes, moving as though someone invisible is holding her back. She talks about bad wizards and Harry thinks she might be struggling because she has no permission to hide. They continue and see a group of Goblins cackling over a sack of gold. They also see three Veela surrounded by a group of young wizards. Harry recognises one of them as Stan Shunpike.
  • Ludo Bagman emerges from behind a tree. They tell him what is happening at the camp and he disapparates.
  • While they are talking they hear someone close. They hear a voice saying a spell ¤ Morsmordre and see something vast, green and glittering erupting into the sky forming the shape of a colossal skull. Hermione pulls Harry away, telling him that it is the Dark Mark, Voldemort’s sign. They start crossing a clearing but twenty wizards apparate suddenly, surrounding them, pointing their wands towards them. Harry yells ‘Duck!’ while pulling Hermione and Ron down onto the ground, and twenty voices cast a Stupefy simultaniously.
  • Mr. Weasly orders them to stop when he realises who the three are. Then Mr. Crouch asks which one of them conjured the Dark Mark. Harry, Ron and Hermione tell him it wasn’t them. One of the witches thinks the person who did it likely will have Disapparated by now, but Amos Diggory, one of the group of twenty, thinks there’s a good chance they got them … their Stunners went right through the trees. He checks it out and finds Mr. Crouch’s house elf Winky, stunned. Mr. Crouch can’t understand and goes to find out if there might be someone else behind the bushes, but doesn’t find anyone. Diggory explains that Winky broke clause three of the Code of Wand Use, “No non-human creature is permitted to carry or use a wand”.
  • Bagman also apparates. Diggory helps Winky regain consciousness with an Enervate. Mr Diggory tells Winky he’s a member of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and they suspect she conjured the Dark Mark. She denies do it. Harry suddenly realises it’s his wand that was found beside her, but nobody suspects he would have conjured the Dark Mark.
  • With a Prior Incantato Mr. Diggory checks the last spells were done with Harry’s wand. A mere shadow of the green skull erupts from the wand. With a ¤ Deletrius he erases it. Although Winky is not proved a hundred percent guilty, Crouch punishes her by setting her free. Mr. Weasley takes Harry, Ron and Hermione back to the camp.
  • At the camp, Bill, Charlie and Percy are slightly injured. Hermione explains to them that the Dark Mark is You-Know-Who’s symbol. She read that in The rise and Fall of the Dark Arts. Bill says it scared the Death Eaters, You-Know-Who’s supporters, the moment they saw it.
  • They will sleep a few hours before they go home.
Chapter 10 Mayhem at the Ministery
  • After a few hours of sleep the whole group goes home. They get a Portkey from Mr. Basil which brings them back. Arriving at the Burrow, Mrs. Weasley is already waiting for them. She read about what happened in the Daily Prophet. There’s a very negative article about the Ministry written by Rita Skeeter. Percy says it’s not the first time she has written bad things about the Ministry, referring to the time when she said they should be stamping out vampires instead of quibbling about cauldron thickness; but according to Percy, it is specifically stated in Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans.
  • Harry tells Ron and Hermione that his scar hurt a short while ago and about Professor Trelawney’s prediction.
  • In the days that follow, Percy complains that people are sending Howlers, complaining about the security at the Cup, and wanting compensation for their ruined property. Mundungus Fletcher put in a claim for his tent. Mr. Weasley is working late. Hermione is reading one of their new books, The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 4 by Miranda Goshawk
  • Later that night, Harry and Ron go through their new things for school; among them, dress robes for formal occasions.
Chapter 11 Aboard the Hogwarts Express
  • The day after, at the Burrow, Mrs. Weasley tells Mr. Weasley he has an urgent message from the Ministry. Harry sees Amos Diggory’s head talking to Mr. Weasley in the middle of flames in the fireplace. He says people from the Improper Use of Magic Office were heading to the scene. Mr. Weasley asks what Mad-Eye said had happened and Amos tells him that Mad-Eye caught some intruders at his house.
  • Bill explains to Harry that Moody, Mad-Eye Moody, is an old friend of Dumbledore’s. He goes on to to say that Moody used to work as an Auror; a Dark-wizard-catcher, for the Ministry. He had made himself lots of enemies, and people say he’s become paranoid.
  • Bill, Charlie and Mrs. Weasley take the rest to King’s Cross. The taxi-drivers do not seem happy, having to transport owls, and a number of No-Heat Fireworks go off while the driver carries Fred’s trunk.
  • They get on the Hogwarts Express at Platform nine and three-quarters.
  • When Harry, Ron and Hermione sit down in the compartment, they hear Draco Malfoy saying that his father had considered sending him to Durmstrang. Hermione explains that Durmstrang is another wizarding school with a lot of emphasis on the Dark Arts. She read it in Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe. All schools are ‘hidden’, bewitched against muggles. It might have Muggle-Repelling Charms like the Cup stadium had, and they have made it Unplottable; enchanted so that it is impossible to plot on a map.
  • They also meet again with Seamus, Dean and Neville.
  • Malfoy overhears them and starts asking if they are going to enter. They don’t know what he is talking about. Malfoy tells them he heard about it from his father ages ago, and makes fun of Ron because his father didn’t even tell him. Ron breaks the glass from the compartment door when sliding it shut and Hermione repairs it with a Reparo.
  • They arrive at Hogwarts some time later.
Chapter 12 The Triwizard Tournament
  • Arriving at the castle, they’re ‘welcomed’ by Peeves with water bombs. McGonagall leads them to the Great Hall. Tables are already set for dinner and they sit down. Colin Creevey is at the table. His brother Dennis will enter this year.
  • The new students enter and the Sorting Ceremony starts. The Sorting Hat sings it’s song. The new students are divided. In Ravenclaw go Stewart Ackerley and Orla Quirke. In Slytherin go Malcolm Baddock and Graham Pritchard. In Hufflepuff, Eleanor Branstone, Owen Cauldwell, Laura Madley and Kevin Whitby and in Gryffindor Dennis Creevey and Natalie McDonald. Also sorted out is Emma Dobbs.
  • Professor Dumbledore has dinner started. Nearly Headless Nick tells them Peeves made trouble earlier that evening, scaring all the House-elves. Hermione is upset to hear there are House-elves working at Hogwarts.
  • Dumbledore has a few more announcements. Filch has asked him to tell everyone that the list of forbidden objects has been extended to include Screaming Yo-yos, Fanged Frisbees and Ever-Bashing Boomerangs. Furthermore, the inter-house Quidditch Cup will not take place this year. At that moment The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher comes in. It is Moody. Dumbledore continues to announce that instead of the Quidditch Cup, this year the Triwizard Tournament will take place. The schools Beauxbatons and Durmstrang will join the event. There have been several attempts over the centuries to reinstate the Tournament, without success. Now, the Department of International Magical Co-operation and the Department of Magical Games and Sports decided the time is ripe. The other schools will arrive in October and the selection of the school champions will be at Halloween. There’s a thousand Galleons prize money. To participate, students must be seventeen years or older. Dumbledore dismisses the students and everybody goes to the dormitory.
  • Fred and George, who won’t be seventeen yet, want to enter anyway, thinking that an Aging Potion might help.
  • The new password is “Balderdash”
Chapter 13 Mad-Eye Moody
  • The first day of school begins. Harry and Ron have Herbology with Professor Sprout first. They have to milk Bubotubers, which are giant black slugs. Their pus is used as a remedy against acne. Hanna Abbott tells them that a girl named Eloise Midgen had once tried to curse off her acne.
  • Next they have Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid. Hagrid makes them raise Blast-Ended Skrewts. Dean gets his hand burned by one of them.
  • In the afternoon they have Divination with profesor Trelawney. They learn how to read the stars. They make fun of the Professor and end up with a lot of homework.
  • Hermione tells them that Professor Vector didn’t give any homework at all.
  • Draco shows Ron a negative article from the Daily Prophet about his father, Mr. Weasley, written by Rita Skeeter. Draco keeps provoking Ron, insulting his parents, and Harry insults Draco’s mother. Draco tries to cast a spell but is prevented by Professor Moody, who turns Draco into a ferret by Transfiguration. Professor McGonagall arrives and sets the situation right.
  • Everyone seems to like Professor Moody.
Chapter 14 The Unforgivable Curses
  • The next two days are calm. While Hermione teaches Neville a Scouring Charm during class, they talk about Snape’s behaviour. Professor Snape is angry he did not get the job of teacher the Defense Against The Dark Arts class again.
  • Harry has his first Defense Against the Dark Arts class from Professor Moody. Moody tells them to put away their “The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection” books; they won’t need them today. He will teach them curses; illegal curses. First he shows them the Imperius Curse which exacts total control over a person or creature, using ¤ Imperio on a spider. Moody tells them that years ago the Ministry had a hard time trying to figure out who was truly cursed with it and who lied about being cursed so that they would not have to be held accountable for their actions.
  • Next he performs the Cruciatus Curse on the spider, giving it unbearable pain with a Crucio after making it a bit bigger with a Engorgement Charm, Engorgio, to show the effect. When finished showing the effect, Moody shrinks it back with a Reducio.
  • And finally he demonstrates the killing curse ¤ Avada Kedavra by using it on the spider. Moody explains that there is no counter-curse for the last one; the only person known to survive is Harry.
  • These three curses are known as the Unforgivable Curses.
  • After class, they see Neville, whose parents (1+2) had been driven insane years ago, is a bit upset. Moody sends Neville to his office to have a word with him.
  • Harry and Ron go back to their dormitory to do their Divination homework. They find Neville there with his eyes red. Moody has given him a book called Magical Mediterranean Water-Plants and Their Properties. Harry and Ron begin studying, consulting their Unfogging the Future books, but end up making up their own predictions for Divination class. While making up their stories, they see Fred and George sitting together looking like they’re up to something.
  • Hermione comes in and shows them she set up S.P.E.W., the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare to stop the enslavement of House-elves.
  • Hedwig flies in with a letter from Sirius saying he is coming their way.
Chapter 15 Beauxbatons and Durmstrang
  • Worried about Sirius coming and the chance of him being caught, Harry writes him back to tell him that he is fine and that there is no need for him to come.
  • In Defense Against the Dark Arts classes, Professor Moody has them practice the Imperius Curse. After some of the other students seem helpless to the curse, it is Harry’s turn. Moody puts an ¤ Imperio on him but Harry partly manages to resist it.
  • One day, coming back from classes, they read an announcement in the Entrance Hall regarding the Triwizard Tournament. The delegations from Beauxbatons and Durmstang will arrive on the 30th of October and there will be a welcoming feast.
  • Harry hears that Cedric Diggory will enter his name to be in the Tournament.
  • During the following week, everything seems to be prepared for the arrival of the two other school-delegations. Everybody seems tense. Even Professor McGonagall told Neville off for not even being able to perform a simple Switching Spell.
  • Hermione tells them that the Heads of the three schools will be among the judges of the Tournament. She is still upset about the ‘slavery’ of house-elves.
  • Harry gets another letter from Sirius.
  • All students meet in the Entrance Hall to welcome Durmstrang and Beauxbatons. The delegation of Beauxbatons arrive first in a horse-drawn carriage. Dumbledore welcomes the Head of the school, Madame Maxime. From the lake the Durmstrang delegation arrives by ship. Dumbledore also welcomes Professor Karkaroff. Among the Durmstrang students is Viktor Krum.
Chapter 16 The Goblet of Fire
  • There is a welcome dinner for the Durmstrang and Beauxbatons school delegations. During dinner a pretty Beauxbatons girl interrupts to ask for the bouillabaisse.
  • Ludo Bagman and Mr. Crouch also enter a while later.
  • At the end of dinner, Dumbledore stands up and announces the start of the Triwizard Tournament. Bagman and Crouch helped organize it and they will join himself, Karkaroff and Madame Maxime in the judging.
  • A casket is brought in and Dumbledore takes out the Goblet of Fire which will select the champions. Students have twenty-four hours to put their name and school on a piece of paper and put it into the Goblet. To ensure that underage students will not enter their name, Dumbledore will draw an Age Line around the Goblet, excluding students under the age of seventeen. All chosen champions will be obliged to see the Tournament through to the end.
  • Fred and George, who are under age, think about using an Aging Potion to trick the Age Line.
  • The Durmstrang students will go back to the ship. Karkaroff offers Krum some wine but he declines. Another student, Poliakoff would like some but is snapped at by Karkaroff. While reaching the door, Krum notices Harry’s Scar and stops. The other Durmstrang students and Karkaroff notice it too.
  • At that moment Moody comes in.
  • Fred, George and Lee Jordan tell they have taken an Aging Potion. Fred tries to put his name into the Goblet first, stepping over the Age Line. George instantly goes after him. The both are hurled out of the circle and suddenly sprout identical long beards. Dumbledore, coming in, tells them he warned them. He sends them to madam Pomfrey who is already tending Miss Fawcett of Ravenclaw and Mr Summers of Hufflepuff.
  • Dean and Seamus are discussing who had already entered their name. Rumour is that Warrington from Slytherin entered his name and Cedric Diggory from Hufflepuff. Angelina Johnson walks in and tells them that she has just put in her name.
  • Next, all the Beaubatons students put in their names.
  • Harry, Ron and Hermione visit Hagrid. He is all dressed up. He tells them the Skrewts are nearly three feet long and that they have started killing each other.
  • Hermione tries to make Hagrid join S.P.E.W. but Hagrid does not agree, saying that the House-elves’ nature is to look after humans. Hagrid seems to have a crush on Madam Maxime
  • The Halloween feast starts. The goblet shoots out the paper with the names of the champions. It selects Krum for Durmstrang, the pretty girl Fleur Delacour for Beauxbatons and Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts. As Dumbledore is getting ready to congratulate those who were chosen, the goblet shoots out another name…Harry Potter.
Chapter 17 The Four Champions
  • Professor McGonagall sends Harry to the room next door after his name has popped out of the Goblet. Krum, Fleur Delacour and Cedric Diggory are already in there. Bagman comes in and tells the three other champions Harry is the fourth champion. They are joined by Snape, Dumbledore, Mr Crouch, Karkaroff and Madame Maxime. Madam Maxime and Karkaroff protest to the fact that Hogwarts has 2 champions now.
  • Dumbledore asks if Harry put his name in the Goblet himself or if he asked somebody to do it. Harry tells him no, he did not. Moody joins in and explains that Harry must compete now, as he is bound by a magical contract. Moody presumes some powerfull wizard used a Confundus Charm to make the Goblet forget only 3 champions may compete, using Harry’s name under a fourth school, with intention to harm Harry or even have him killed. Dumbledore explains all 4 have to compete, the Goblet has chosen.
  • The four champions are told that the first task will test their daring.
  • The teachers leave and the four students are sent to their dormitories. On his way back, Harry wonders who put his name in the Goblet. The Fat Lady already heard about the story from Violet. Harry enters the dormitory.
  • He walks right into the Gryffindor’s celebration, everybody wondering how he managed to get his name in the Goblet. Harry is not much into partying and goes upstairs to talk to Ron. Ron is upset that Harry didn’t include him in his plans to enter his name. Explaining he did not is no use, Ron does not want to believe him.
Chapter 18 The Weighing of the Wands
  • The day after the champions-selection, Ron is still angry. Hermione thinks it is obvious Harry didn’t put his name in the Goblet himself. Hermione explains that Ron is simply jealous of Harry’s fame; that he doesn’t really believe Harry put his name in the Goblet himself.
  • Hermione makes Harry write a letter to Sirius explaining what has happened.
  • In the next days, everybody seems to think Harry entered his name himself. All the Hufflepuff students think he has stolen their Champion’s glory.
  • Ernie Macmillan and Justin Finch-Fletchley from Hufflepuff don’t even talk to Harry while re-potting Bouncing Bulbs during Herbology.
  • Draco Malfoy also gives Harry a hard time during Care of Magical Creatures, but Hagrid immediately knew it wasn’t Harry who entered his name.
  • During Potions, Malfoy and the Slytherins wear badges supporting Cedric. Malfoy calls Hermione a Mudblood. They get into a wizard fight. Harry casts a ¤ Furnunculus while Malfoy casts a Densaugeo at the same time. Harry’s spell hits Goyle, springing up ugly boils on his face, and Malfoy’s hits Hermione, her front teeth growing rapidly. Snape arrives and punishes Harry and Ron. Snape teaches them Antidotes during class. Colin Creevey comes in, telling Snape that he was sent to get Harry to be photographed along with the other Champions.
  • Krum, Fleur and Cedric are already waiting. Bagman is there too and tells Harry that the Wand Weighing is about to start. Rita Skeeter is there to take pictures and write an article for the Daily Prophet. She requests to have a private word with Harry and they go into a broom cupboard. She uses a Quick-Quotes Quill to write automaticaly on a parchment while she is speaking. She asks all kind of nasty and harrassing questions until they are interrupted by Dumbledore.
  • She asks Dumbledore if he saw her piece about the International Confederation of Wizards’ Conference. Dumbledore obviously did not like it because it had bad comments about him.
  • The Wand Weighing starts. Karkaroff, Madame Maxime and Mr. Crouch are also there, joining Dumbledore and Bagman in the judge-panel. Mr. Ollivander is doing the Weighing.
  • Fleur’s Wand is checked first. It contains a hair of a Veela, Fleur’s grandmother. Mr. Ollivander tests it with a Orchideous, growing some flowers. Cedric’s Wand is next, containing a Unicorn hair. Then Krum’s; his Wand was made by the wand-maker Gregorovitch. It contains a Dragon heartstring. With a Avis, birds flying out it’s end when tested. Next is Harry’s Wand. It contains a feather from the same Phoenix as Voldemort’s Wand. The champions then pose for photographs together.
  • Harry goes down to dinner. Ron tells him he received an owl. It’s from Sirius, asking Harry to meet by the fire in Gryffindor Tower at one o’clock in the morning on 22nd November.
Chapter 19 The Hungarian Horntail
  • Harry is nervous about the first Task. Rita Skeeter wrote an article filled with lies about him in the Daily Prophet, and the Slytherins tease him with it.
  • There is a Hogsmeade trip and Harry wears his Invisibility Cloak so that he will not be bothered. Harry and Hermione go into the Three Broomsticks and have a Butterbeer.
  • Hagrid and Moody enter. When they are about to leave, Harry waves. Moody apparently can see right through the Invisibility cloak and they join their table. Hagrid asks Harry to meet him at night.
  • At night, wearing his Cloak, he visits Hagrid. Hagrid wants to show him something. Hagrid goes to get Madam Maxime and Harry follows them into the Forbidden Forest. After a while, Harry hears voices. He takes a look into the open area ahead and finds out the first task.
  • Dragons. Four of them, being held by dozens of wizards. The wizards use Stunning spells, casting a Stupefy all at the same time to control them. Harry finds out that Charlie Weasley organising the whole thing.
  • Charlie tells Hagrid they put the Dragons out with a Sleeping Draught. He explains the four different breeds, a black Hungarian Horntail, a green Common Welsh Green, a blue grey Swedish Short-Snout and a red Chinese Fireball. The champions will have to get past them for the first task.
  • Harry has seen enough and goes back. He runs into Karkaroff. He deduces Karkaroff is also trying to find out the first task so that he can tell Victor Krum.
  • Harry goes back to the common room and waits at the fireplace for Sirius. Sirius’ head appears in the fire. Harry tells him everything that happened. Sirius has to hurry, he had to break into a house to use the fireplace. He tells Harry that Karkaroff used to be a Death Eater. He was in Azkaban but betrayed other Death Eaters to the Ministry to get himself out. With the attack on Moody and Bertha Jorkins’ disappearance, Sirius is suspicious. Before he can tell Harry how to deal with the Dragon he is cut off, only able to hint that Harry just needs a simple spell.
Chapter 20 The First Task
  • The next day Harry tells Hermione about the first task and his conversation with Sirius. They try to find a simple spell which will help in books like Men Who Love Dragons Too Much. They hypothesize about using Switching Spells and Transfiguring the dragon but can not think of easy ways. Harry also consults Basic Hexes for the Busy and Vexed. They have no luck finding an easy solution.
  • Harry is getting depressed and afraid at the prospect of the first task. One day he decides to tell Cedric what the first task will be, so that Cedric will not be the only one not to know it. With a ¤ Diffindo charm he splits open Cedric’s bag to distract him. Picking up his stuff, including A Guide to Advanced Transfiguration, Harry tells him. They are interrupted by Professor Moody who takes Harry into his office
  • Moody knows Harry told Cedric and thinks it was a decent thing to do. Harry sees a Sneakoscope on the desk and more unknown objects in the room. Moody explains they are Dark Detectors. Among them a Secrecy Sensor and a Foe-Glass. Also there is some kind of trunk. Moody tells Harry to get past the Dragon he’ll have to use what he’s good at and to use the spell to get something he needs. Then Harry understands, he’ll have to summon his Firebolt.
  • The next days Hermione helps Harry practice the Summoning Charm. Until late in the night he practices on objects, among them books, quills, chairs, Gobstones, Neville’s toad Trevor and a Rune Dictionary, summoning them with the Accio charm.
  • The day of the first task of the Triwizard Tournament, the champions are sent for during class and Harry is taken to a tent where each contentant waits for their turn. Krum, Fleur and Cedric are already waiting. Bagman is there too, telling them their object is to collect the golden egg. They all have to take out a model of a Dragon from a bag to see who will face which dragon. Fleur takes out the Welsh Green. Krum the Chinese Fireball, Cedric the Swedish Short-Snout and Harry the Hungarian Horntail. Bagman leaves to do the commentary.
  • Cedric faces his Dragon first. Fleur goes after Cedric. Krum is next. Then it’s Harry’s turn. He goes out to the field and sees the Dragon. Using the charm ¤ Accio Firebolt he summons his broom. After a long duel with the Dragon he manages to get the golden egg. Professor McGonagall sends him to see Madam Pomfrey before the judges give the score. While waiting, Hermione and Ron come in. Ron has changed his mind, believing someone put Harry’s name in the Goblet to have him killed.
  • Ron tells Harry Cedric used a Transfiguration to destract the Dragon, Fleur used a kind of sleeping charm and Krum hit it with some kind of spell right in the eye. Harry gets his score, eight of ten from Madame Maxime, nine from Mr Crouch, nine from Dumbledore, ten from Bagman and four from Karkaroff. Harry is in first place along with Krum.
  • Bagman tells the champions that the eggs hold the clue to what the second task is and how to prepare themselves.
Chapter 21 The House-Elf Liberation Front
  • Harry and Ron have made up. Harry tells Ron about Karkaroff having been a Death Eater. Together with Hermione, they go to the owlery to send a letter to Sirius. The next they go to the common room for Harry’s surprise party. Everybody speculates about the clue of the golden egg, which makes a screechy wailing sound when it is opened. Neville eats one of Fred and George’s new inventions, Canary Creams.
  • In Care of Magical Creatures classes, Hagrid’s Skrewts are growing larger. Just ten of them are left. While putting them into boxes, Rita Skeeter comes by. Skeeter notices the injuries caused by the Skrewts on Dean, Lavender and Seamus. She tries to get some story for the Daily Prophet. She will interview Hagrid next friday.
  • Hermione takes Harry and Ron to the castle kitchens. Among the House-elves, they find Dobby, wearing all sorts of clothes. Dobby tells them that Dumbledore gave him and Winky, Mr. Crouch’s old house-elf, jobs. Winky is devestated by the rejection of her old master. She, is ashamed of being set free, as most elves would be.
Chapter 22 The Unexpected Task
  • Harry and Ron are in Professor McGonagall’s Transfiguration class. Their homework assignment is to describe the ways in which Transforming Spells must be adapted when performing Cross-Species Switches. McGonagall announces the Yule Ball is approaching. They will have to wear dress robes. After class she has a private word with Harry, telling him that he, as one of the Champions, will have to open the ball with their dance partners.
  • Harry would like to ask Cho Chang. Girls ask him to go with them but he says no. There is no article yet about Hagrid from Rita Skeeter.
  • For the ball, Dumbledore has booked the Weird Sisters, a famous group which can be heard regularly on the Wizarding Wireless Network.
  • Fred and George want to borrow Ron’s owl. Fred asks Angelina to the ball. Ron suggests they should ask someone too. He says he does not want to end up with a ugly girl like Eloise Midgeon.
  • The Great Hall is being prepared for the ball by the Professors; decorated with Everlasting icicles. Harry and Ron decide to ask a girl, promising each other they’ll have asked someone before night falls. After a long time of nerveousness, Harry finally asks Cho. She already has promised to go with Cedric.
  • Being upset Cho is already taken, he goes back to the common room, entering the Fat Lady’s painting with the new password Fairy Lights. Ron is already there and tells Harry that he asked Fleur Delacour but she declined. Harry tells Ron she is part Veela. Seemingly they are the only ones left with no partners yet, except Neville who asked Hermione. Hermione already has a partner. Neville asked Ginny afterwards and they go together. At that moment Parvati and Lavender come in and Harry asks Parvati, who accepts but Lavender is already going with Seamus. Parvati will ask her sister Padma Patil if she wants to go with Ron.
Chapter 23 The Yule Ball
  • Hermione tells Ron and Harry her teeth look better now because, after the hex Malfoy put on her, she let Madam Pomfry fix them without telling her they used to look worse. Pigwidgeon arrives with a letter from Sirius. He congratulates Harry for getting past the Horntail. He would have suggested a Conjunctivitus curse. This curse is what Krum used.
  • On christmas day, Harry wakes up to find Dobby in his room. Dobby brings him a present. Harry and Ron give Dobby clothes as a present. Hermione gave Harry a book called Quidditch Teams of Britain and Ireland. From Ron he gets a bag of Dungbombs, from Sirius a penknife, from Hagid Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, Chocolate Frogs, Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum and Fizzing Whizzbees.
  • The three go to breakfast together and later they have a sumptuous lunch which includes chistmas puddings and Cribbages Wizarding Crackers. That night, they will be attending the Yule Ball.
  • Everybody gets dressed for the Ball. Ron uses a Severing Charm to remove the frills from his robe. Next they go down to the common room where Parvati is already waiting. Padma meets with Ron in the Entrance Hall downstairs. Everybody is waiting for the Great Hall doors to open. Fleur Delacour is going with Ravenclaw Quidditch captain Roger Davies. Malfoy is going with Pansy Parkinson. The Durmstrang students enter with Karkaroff. Professor McGonagall calls the Champions to the main table. Cho Chang is with Cedric Diggory. Suddenly he realises the girl with Krum is Hermione. She looks completely different; very pretty. Dumbledore, Madame Maxime and Bagman are also present but Mr. Crouch is missing and Percy is in his place. Percy tells Harry he has been promoted to Mr. Crouch’s personal assistant. Hagrid is also at the Ball.
  • The Weird Sisters begin performing. The Champions initiate the Ball dance. Soon other people are dancing, including Neville and Ginny, Dumbledore and Madame Maxime, Professor Moody with Professor Sinistra and Fred with Angelina. Ron seems to be jealous of Krum, going with Hermione.
  • Fred and George begin talking to Bagman, who seems to shake them of quickly. He says he promised to put them in touch with some contacts at Zonko’s. Percy tells Bagman Mr. Crouch could not come because he had work to do regarding Ali Bashir’s case of smuggling, and trying to persuade the Transylvanians to sign the International Ban on Duelling.
  • Harry and Ron go for a walk outside. They overhear Karkaroff talking with Snape. Snape punishes two students who happen to pass by, Fawcett and Stebbins.
  • They also overhear Hagrid talking to Madam Maxime. Hagrid tells her the moment he saw her, he knew she was like him, asking if it was her mother or her father and telling her it was hís mother. He is stating that they are both half-Giants but she refuses to accept this idea.
  • Harry finds out Giants are not popular in the Wizard world. Ron always thought Hagrid got in the way of a bad Engorgement Charm or something. Giants are rumored to be vicious; it is in their nature. They like killing. There are not many Giants left.
  • Before going back to their dormitories, Cedric gives Harry a hint to take his egg with him in in the bath. He offers him the option to use the Prefects’ bathroom and tells him the password is ‘Pine-fresh’.
Chapter 24 Rita Skeeter’s Scoop
  • Everybody gets up late the day after the Ball. Hermione confesses she used a lot of Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion the day before.
  • Harry still hasn’t managed to find out the clue of the golden egg.
  • They have Care of Magical Creatures classes. Hagrid is not there. Instead, Professor Grubbly-Plank replaces him temporarily. She has a Unicorn as topic of her lesson.
  • Malfoy tells them why Hagrid is not present, showing them an awfull article about him from Rita Skeeter in the Daily Prophet. Malfoy says bad things about him in the article. It also reveals Hagrid is half-Giant; something she somehow has found out. His mother, Fridwulfa, is a giantess.
  • Ron, Hermione and Harry speculate on how Skeeter found out Hagrid’s origin.
  • At night they try to meet with Hagrid but he doesn’t open the door.
  • They visit Hogsmeade. In the Three Broomsticks they see Bagman talking with a group of Goblins. Spotting Harry he goes over to talk to him. Bagman tells Harry that Mr. Crouch is ill. Also there’s no more news about Bertha Jorkins which must worry Mr. Crouch. Bagman offers to tell Harry the way to find out the clue of the golden egg. Rita Skeeter enters the pub. Harry has an angry loud conversation with her.
  • At night they finally manage to talk to Hagrid. Dumbledore is also in Hagrid’s cabin. They convince a desperate Hagrid that he’s not unwelcome and that he needs to stay and teach. Harry tells Hagrid that having the Dursleys as family is as bad as Hagrid’s situation. Also Dumbledore tells him that his brother Aberforth also has had his moments of unpopularity. Dumbledore refuses Hagrid’s resignation and orders him to continue teaching again.
Chapter 25 The Egg and the Eye
  • Harry decides to take the golden egg to the bath in the Prefects’ bathroom. Using his Invisibility Cloak and the Marauder’s Map he goes to the bathroom at night. Ron opens the portrait hole for him with the new password ‘Banana Fritters’. Reaching the statue of Boris the Bewildered he enters the bathroom with the password ‘Pine-fresh’.
  • On a painting on the wall there’s a blonde Mermaid. When he opens the golden egg it starts wailing. Moaning Myrtle appears and suggests putting it ín the water; that’s what Cedric did. Putting his head under water, Harry hears this song:
  • Come seek us where our voices sound,
We cannot sing above the ground,
And while you’re searching, ponder this; We’ve taken what you’ll sorely miss,An hour long you’ll have to look,And to recover what we took,But past an hour – the prospect’s blackToo late, it’s gone, it won’t come back.

Listening three more times he memorises the song. Then he discovers the clue. It has to do with the Merpeople in the lake.
  • He gets out of the bath and leaves the bathroom. On the map he sees Bartemius Crouch’s name in Snape’s office. He goes in the direction to check it out. His leg get’s stuck in one of the chairs’ steps, letting the egg and the map drop. Filch turns up to check out what the noise is. Filch finds the egg, thinking it was Peeves who stole it. Snape also turns up and Moody a moment later. Moody, who can look through the Invisibility Cloak, sees Harry. Snape tries to take the map from the floor, but, Harry signals to Moody that it is his. Moody uses an Accio to get it before Snape can get hold of it. Snape realises Harry is nearby and wants to search for him but Moody manipulates him and scares him away. Moody also takes the egg back from Filch. Snape and Filch leave. Moody helps Harry get out of the stairs, gives him back the egg and borrows the Marauders Map. Harry tells him that Mr. Crouch showed up on the map in Snapes’ office.
Chapter 26 The Second Task
  • During having Charms classes, while practising the Banishing Charm, Harry tells Ron and Hermione he figured out the clue and what happened the night before. They speculate about Snape possibly being involved in putting Harry’s name in the Goblet.
  • Harry also sends a letter to Sirius telling him what happened.
  • The following days Harry, Ron and Hermione look for solutions to Harry’s second task, which will require him to stay under water for an hour. Ron suggests summoning an aqualung from the nearest muggle town, but Hermione dismisses this because he’d be disqualified for breaking the International Code of Wizard Secrecy. Hermione thinks the best thing is some kind of charm. Harry asks Professor McGonagall’s permission to use the Restricted Section of the Library and for help from Madam Pince, the librarian, but he finds nothing useful.
  • Time is running out. Harry gets back a letter from Sirius asking when the next Hogsmeade weekend is. No answer to his problem for the second task is in the letter since Harry forgot to ask.
  • Hagrid continues teaching the Care of Magical Creatures with Unicorns. He seems to know as much about them as he knows about monsters.
  • The evening before the second task, Harry is desperate. Ron and Hermione help him search in the Library for a solution in books like Olde and Forgotten Bewitchments and Charmes, Saucy Tricks for Tricky Sorts and Weird Wizarding Dilemmas and Their Solutions. The closest thing they find is a Drought Charm but it’s not powerfull enough to dry up the lake. Fred and George turn up saying they’ve been sent by Professor McGonagall to get Ron and Hermione.
  • After the Library closes, Harry continues to search in the common room in books he borrowed like Madcap Magic for Wacky Warlocks, A Guide to Medieval Sorcery, An Anthology of Eighteenth-Century Charms, Dreadful Denizens of the Deep and Powers You Never Knew You Had and What to Do With Them Now You’ve Wised Up. By the time everybody has gone to bed, Harry is still without an answer and decides to go back to the Library wearing his Invisibility Cloak. Using a ¤ Lumos to get some light he enters the Library and starts searching again.
  • The next morning Harry is woken by Dobby. Harry fell asleep in the Library, his face in Where There’s a Wand, There’s a Way. The second task of the Triwizard Tournament starts in ten minutes. Dobby tells him Harry has to get Ron back. He gives Harry Gillyweed which will allow him to breathe under water, Dobby overheard Moody talking to McGonagall about the second task. Harry speeds downstairs to the lake. Krum, Fleur and Cedric are already waiting, as well as Dumbledore, Karkaroff, Madame Maxime, Bagman and Percy at the judging table.
  • Bagman amplifies his voice with a ¤ Sonorus and announces the task will now begin. Eating the Gillyweed Harry enters the lake. He temporarily grows gills in his neck and dives down in the lake.
  • On his way down, Grindylows try to catch him but with a ¤ Relashio he manages to shake them off. He also encounters Moaning Myrtle who came to see the event and gives Harry a tip on how to avoid the Grindylows. He finally reaches the bottom hearing the Merpeople sing the song from the egg. The Merpeople are emerging from all directions. Four people are bound to the tail of a stone merperson, Ron, Hermione, Cho Chang and another girl which Harry believes to be Fleur’s sister, all unconsious. To free them, Harry tries to get a spear from the merpeople but they refuse to help. Harry gets a rock and manages to free Ron. Next he tries to free Hermione but the merpeople prevent him from freeing the others.
  • Cedric arrives with an enormous bubble around his head. He frees Cho and takes her up. Next Krum arrives, in swimming trunks and his head Transfigured into a shark. Harry gives Krum the stone and Krum takes Hermione up.
  • Realising Fleur won’t make it, Harry defies the merepeople, challenging them with his wand to let him free Fleur’s sister also. They back down and Harry takes Ron and Fleur’s sister up, arriving just in time before the effect of the Gillyweed wears off.
  • Ron, regaining consiousness, tells Harry that the song was not meant to be taken literally, that nobody was really in any danger. Now Harry seems to have lost precious time waiting for the others.
  • Madam Pomfrey takes care of everybody. Fleur, very upset, checks on her sister Gabrielle.
  • Dumbledore is in deep conversation with the chief of the merpeople, and has a quick conference with the other judges afterwards.
  • Fleur thanks Harry for saving her sister.
  • Bagman announces the judges reached a decision. Fleur, although using a Bubble-Head Charm, failed and gets twenty-five points. Cedric, using the same charm, but outside the time limit. gets forty-seven points. Krum gets forty points. Harry, however returning after the others, arrived first at the scene according to the merpeople but stayed to ensure the rescue of all the hostages, therefore gets forty-five points.
  • The third task will be in June., The champions will hear details one month before.
Chapter 27 Padfoot Returns
  • Harry gets a letter from Sirius telling him to be at the end of the road at Dervish and Banges at the next Hogsmeade weekend.
  • Before entering Potions class, Malfoy shows Harry, Ron and Hermione an article in Witch Weekly about Hermione by Rita Skeeter. It describes Hermione as an awful fame-seeker, but she’s not offended by it. In classes they make a Wit-Sharpening Potion. Hermione wonders how Skeeter knows details of things she is not supposed to know. Snape spots the article and reads it out loud as punishment to Hermione for reading in class. Snape accuses Harry of breaking into his office. Harry denies this. Snape shows Harry Veritaserum, a Truth Potion, threatening to use it on him. Karkaroff comes in, desperately wanting to talk to Snape. Snape wants to talk after class. Harry deliberately knocks over a bottle to overhear the conversation after class. Karkaroff shows Snape something on his inner forearm.
  • The next day they depart for Hogsmeade village. In Gladrags Wizardwear they buy a present for Dobby. At half past one they make their way past Dervish and Banges towards the edge of the village. They find a black dog there; it is Sirius. The dog starts walking and they follow it. Sirius leads them up a mountain to a cave where he hides.
  • He tells them he’s been stealing the Daily Prophets daily, and he’s getting worried about all the news articles concerning Mr. Crouch and he wants to know everything that happened the night of the Quidditch World Cup and the Dark Mark event. He tells them it was Crouch who sent him to Azkaban without a trial. Crouch used to be head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He was tipped as the next Minister of Magic. He used to be very outspoken against the Dark side. Years ago, when Voldemort was at the height of his power, Crouch rose quickly through the Ministry of Magic and ordered harsh measures against Voldemort’s supporters. Aurors were given new powers; for instance to kill instead of to capture, and he authorised the use of the Unforgivable Curses against suspects. When Voldemort disappeared, it looked like Crouch would go right to the top job. But then his son was caught with a group of Death Eaters. Crouch put his son on trial and sent him right to Azkaban. His son died about a year after they brought him in, Crouch and his wife visiting his deathbed.
  • Sirius also wonders about Snape’s involvement. Snape always was interested in the Dark Arts and knew more curses then many other students who turned out to be Death Eaters, like Rosier and Wilkes; both of whom were killed by Aurors, the Lestranges (+R) couple; they are in Azkaban, and Avery, who claimed to have been under the Imperius Curse at the time.
  • Harry tells Sirius that Karkaroff showed Snape his arm.
  • Sirus asks Ron to check with Percy if he’s seen Mr Crouch lately and if they have any leads on Bertha Jorkins.
  • They go back down the hill. Sirius suggests to use the name Snuffles instead of his real name when talking about him when he is near other people. They return to the village and then back to Hogwarts.
Chapter 28 The Madness of Mr Crouch
  • Harry, Ron and Hermione go to the school kitchen to give Dobby his present. Harry thanks Dobby for the Gillyweed. Winky is getting more depressed every day, drinking six bottles of Butterbeer per day. Harry asks Winky if she knows more about Mr. Crouch’s whereabouts. Winky says that she doesn’t just help Mr. Crouch, but is also trusted with his most important secrets. She tells him she does not reveal what they are. The other House-elves are ashamed of Winky’s behaviour. Harry, Ron and Hermione send some food they got from the kitchen to Sirius.
  • Hermione took a subscription to the Daily Prophet. She also receives daily letters from people who are angry at her because of the last article by Rita Skeeter. She receives a letter with undiluted Bubotuber pus.
  • In Care of Magical Creatures classes, Hagrid shows them Nifflers, creatures who like sparkly stuff. They are used for treasure detection. The Nifflers dig up Leprechaun gold that Hagrid has buried.
  • Hermione receives more hate mail and Howlers. She wants to know how Rita Skeeter manages to listen in on private conversations. After their Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson in which they had Hex-deflection, Harry remains with a case of Twitchy Ears. He asks Moody if he has any idea how Rita Skeeter is getting her information. Moody can just confirm that she is not using an Invisibility Cloak.
  • A letter from Percy arrives, saying Mr. Crouch is taking a break.
  • Professor McGonagall tells Harry to go to the Quidditch pitch at night where he’ll be informed about the third task. At night he finds out the Quidditch pitch has been turned into a maze. The Cup will be placed in the centre. The first one who touches it will receive full marks. Bagman explains there will be obstacles; creatures, spells and other things.
  • Afterwards, Krum wants to have a word with Harry. He heads for the forest and Harry follows. Krum wants to know what there is between Harry and Hermione. Harry tells him there is nothing between them; that they are just friends. They hear something behind the trees. They find Mr. Crouch. Crouch looks as if he’s been travelling for days and he seems delirious, seemingly talking in air to Percy. He’s babbling that he needs to warn Dumbledore and that he has done a stupid thing. He is also talking about Bertha, his son, and the Dark Lord.
  • Harry goes to get Dumbledore while Krum watches Mr. Crouch. At the entrance of Dumbledore’s office he finds the password has changed. Snape emerges from the entrance. Dumbledore comes out a moment later and they speed back to the forest. Neither Krum nor Crouch is there. With a ¤ Lumos Dumbledore makes some light in the dark and they find Krum Stunned on the ground. Dumbledore brings him back to consiousness with an Enervate. Krum explains he was attacked from behind. Dumbledore sends for Hagrid, Karkaroff and Moody. Moody is already arriving on the spot. Karkaroff is furious, thinking it’s all a plot. Hagrid takes Harry back to the school.
Chapter 29 The Dream
  • In the owlery, Harry, Ron and Hermione speculate about what happened with Krum and Crouch in the forest. Fred and George come in to send a letter. Nobody wants to explain what they are doing. Ron asks his brothers who they are blackmailing but they say they were only joking. Ron is worried about them. They want to start a joke-shop but they need gold to do that.
  • In the afternoon they visit Professor Moody to see if he found Mr. Crouch. He hasn’t. Moody suggests maybe he was kidnapped.
  • Harry receives a letter from Sirius saying he should have been more careful going out alone with Krum. He also advises practicing Stunning Spells, Disarming Charms and learning a few Hexes for the third task.
  • Harry practices the Stunning Spell. They also make a list of hexes in the library for Harry to practice, including the Impediment Jinx which slows down anything.
  • Harry and Ron have Divination with Professor Trelawney. Harry falls asleep during class. He has a nightmare he is flying on an owl to some ivy-covered house high on a hillside, entering through the window. He sees a huge Snake and another person. He hears a conversation between Voldemort and Wormtail. The snake is called Nagini. Voldemort uses a Crucio on Wormtail.
  • Harry wakes up screaming, clutching his Scar. He says he wants to go to the Hospital wing and leaves. He goes straight to Dumbledore however. He finds out the password and enters up the stairs to his office.
  • He hears voices. In there Dumbledore is talking with Moody and Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic, about what might have happened in the forest with Crouch. Moody, looking right through the door, announces Harry is waiting outside.
Chapter 30 The Pensieve
  • Harry waits while Dumbledore accompanies Fudge and Moody downstairs. Harry sees Fawkes, the Sorting Hat and the sword of Godric Gryffindor. He also sees something shimmering from inside a black cabinet and checks it out. He sees a basin with a whitish silver substance. When he prods his wand into it, he sees inside.
  • He sees room full of witches and wizards and an empty chair in the centre. Bending down and looking closer, his noses touches the substance and Harry falls into the room. He’s sitting next to Dumbledore in some dungeon, but neither Dumbledore nor anyone else seems to notice Harry. Harry realises this is some sort of memory item.
  • He sees two Dementors bringing in a man in a room (book 5 spoiler!). It is Karkaroff. Next he sees Mr. Crouch asking Karkaroff for the names of the Voldemort supporters he claims to have. Harry also sees Moody. Everybody looks much younger. Karkaroff starts naming names, beginning with Antonin Dolohov. Crouch says Dolohov is already apprehended. Evan Rosier, Crouch states. He is told Rosier is dead. Travers, who helped murder the McKinnons. Augustus Rookwood who works for the Ministry at the Department of Mysteries. This name seems to surprise Crouch and the rest, but he tells Karkaroff that Travers and Mulciber are already in custody. Then he names Snape. Crouch says that Snape has been cleared by the council. Dumbledore says that Snape was a Death Eater but he rejoined their side before Voldemort’s downfall and turned spy for them.
  • The event fades away and Harry sees the scene return to a different time. Again Mr. Crouch is there. He also sees Rita Skeeter and Dumbledore. This is a different trial. Ludo Bagman is brought in. Crouch states that Bagman is brought before the Council of Magical Law to explain his contact with Death Eaters. Bagman claims he didn’t know and that he was tricked. Rookwood was a friend of his father. He didn’t know about that when he gave him information. Rookwood promised him a job at the Ministry. The jury decides he is innocent.
  • The dungeon dissolves again and returns. Next to Mr. Crouch, this time, his wife is sobbing. Crouch’s son is brought in, together with three others (1, 2, 3 book 5 spoiler). They are accused of capturing the Auror, Frank Longbottom and his wife and subjecting him to the Cruciatus Curse. They are sentenced to life in Azkaban. Crouch’s son keeps claiming to be innocent while the other three promise to bring Voldemort back to power.
  • Dumbledore asks Harry to come back and they return to Dumbledore’s office. He explains to Harry that the basin is a Pensieve, used to store memories.
  • Next he shows Harry another memory. This one is of Bertha Jorkins telling Dumbledore she “was only teasing him but he put a hex on her when she said she saw him kissing Florence”
  • Harry tells Dumbledore about the dream he had in Divination. Dumbledore wants to know if his scar hurt at any time after it did in the summer. He heard about the last time from Sirius. Harry would like to know if it was just a dream or maybe Voldemort is getting stronger. Dumbledore does not know. But regarding Jorkin’s and Crouch’s disappearance, and lately a Muggle called Frank Bryce who has been reported missing, it is not that unlikely that Voldemort is getting stronger.
  • Harry asks about Neville’s parents and is told they are both insane. They are in St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Neville has been raised by his grandmother.
Chapter 31 The Third Task
  • Harry tells Ron and Hermione about all the things he saw in the Pensieve. They speculate intensely about everyone Harry had seen
  • Ron and Hermione help Harry prepare for the third task, practicing charms and hexes like the Impediment Jinx. Professor McGonagall gives Harry permision to practice in the Transfiguration classroom. He also practices the Reductor Curse, used to blast solid objects out of the way, and the Four-Point Spell, used to make a wand point north. Harry still has difficulties with the Shield Charm, creating a temporary invisible wall to deflect curses. Hermione manages to shatter it with a Jelly-Legs Jinx. They see Malfoy outside speaking in his hand as though he was using a walkie-talkie.
  • Harry receives another letter from Sirius telling him to be careful.
  • The day of the third task arrives. Hermione receives her copy of the Daily Prophet. It has an article about Harry by Rita Skeeter, speculating about Harry’s health and saneness, stating that his scar regularly hurts. Malfoy told her that Harry can speak Parseltongue and Skeeter doubts whether Harry won’t end up in Dark Arts. They wonder again how she could have known all these things. Hermione has a sudden hunch.
  • Professor McGonagall tells Harry that he, Krum, Fleur and Cedric are requested in the Hall after breakfast to see their family. The families of the Champions are there, Amos Diggory and his wife, Krum’s parents, Fleurs parents and her sister Gabrielle. Mrs. Weasley and Bill have come to see Harry. Both studied at Hogwarts and ask about Sir. Cadogan and the Fat Lady. Mrs. Weasley tells them she was once caught by Apollyon Pringle, the caretaker in those days. They take a walk through the castle. Mrs. Weasley tells Harry Percy is under a lot of strain concerning Mr. Crouch’s disappearance and Mr. Fudge will replace him in the judging at night.
  • At night the judges takes their seats at the staff table; Fudge, Bagman, Dumbledore, Karkaroff and Madame Maxime. Dinner is served.
  • The third task is about to start at the Quidditch pitch. Hagrid, Professor Moody, Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick will be patrolling the outside of the maze. If anybody is into difficulties, they have been instructed to send three sparks into the air and one of the professors will come and get them out.
  • Bagman amplifies his voice again with a Sonorus and announces the third task of the Triwizard Tournament will begin. Harry and Cedric enter first. Both use a Lumos to create some light and they split up in different directions. After a while Krum and Fleur enter.
  • Harry uses the Four-Point Spell ¤ Point Me to orientate himself. He runs into Cedric who had an encounter with Blast-Ended Skrewts which are enormous by now. They split up again. Harry runs into a Dementor and uses the Patronus Charm Expecto Patronum on it. He realizes it is a Boggart and uses a Riddikulus next.
  • Next he runs into some odd golden mist. He tries to blow it out of the way with a Reducto, but to no effect. He hears Fleur yell, he takes the chance and tries to run through the mist. The world turns upside-down, after a while he manages to get out.
  • A Blast-Ended Skrewt turns up. He casts a Stupefy but it bounces on its armour. Next he tries the Impediment Jinx Impedimenta but it also ricochets off the armour. He tries again, this time the Skrewt freezes but just temporarily. Harry runs.
  • He hears Cedric asking “What are you doing” and next Krum’s voice, casting a Crucio. He tries to go there to help Cedric but can’t find the way. With a Reductor Curse he blows a small hole in the hedge and goes through. Krum is standing over Cedric. Then, seeing Harry, he runs away. Harry stuns him with a Stupefy and helps Cedric up. They split up again.
  • Harry meets a sphinx and has to solve a riddle.
  • He continues and finally arrives at the open area with the Triwizard Cup. He sprints for it but Cedric is also going for it. A giant Spider is in Cedric’s path. Cedric just lost his wand. Harry speeds to help, casting a Stupefy at the spider. It’s no use, the spider is too big, and he’s caught by its legs and lifted up. Cedric also is yelling Stupefy. Harry tries an ¤ Expelliarmus and it works. The Disarming Charm makes the spider drop him. Both of them cast another Stupefy at the same time and the spider keels over sideways.
  • Harry’s leg is bleeding. Both think the other should get the Cup. They end up taking it together. The moment they take the handle, their feet leave the ground and they’re pulled onwards by the Cup.
Chapter 32 Flesh, Blood and Bone
  • Harry and Cedric come to a stop. They are in a graveyard. Apparently the Triwizard Cup is a Portkey. They hear someone coming. Harry’s Scar bursts with pain. Someone gives an order to “kill the spare” and Harry hears someone cast the ¤ Avada Kedavra. Harry sees a green light, his Scar bursts again with pain and then the pain decreases. Opening his eyes, he sees Cedric lying dead on the ground.
  • The person turns out to be Wormtail, Peter Pettigrew. Wormtail ties Harry to a grave with the name Tom Riddle. Wormtail is placing a stone cauldron in the foot of the grave. From a pile of robes on the ground, Wormtail picks up the hideous Voldemort, who is in the shape of a crouched human child; hairless and scaly reddish black, with weakened limbs and with a flat and snakelike face and gleaming red eyes.
  • Wormtail puts the creature into the cauldron and recites some ritualistic text. He cuts off his own hand and puts it in the cauldron. Harry is stabbed with a dagger and blood is taken from him and put into the cauldron.
  • Voldemort steps out of the cauldron, back to his full strength.

He says the Lestranges (+R) are still in Azkaban, and his most faithful servant is at Hogwarts.
  • Voldemort explains that Lily Potter, Harry’s mother, died attempting to save Harry. She performed some old magic that he overlooked. The death curse bounced back on him. He goes on to tell what happened in the years following this until now; how he used Quirell to get the Sorcerer’s Stone; how he went into hiding again; how he got information with a Memory Charm and afterwards killed Bertha Jorkins; how he used a potion from Unicorn blood and Nagini’s venom to stay alive up till how he managed to get Harry with help from a Death Eater at Hogwarts.
  • Voldemort uses the Cruciatus Curse Crucio again on Harry. Harry is given his Wand back; given a chance to fight back.
Chapter 34 Priori Incantatem
  • Harry has his Wand back. Voldemort challenges him to a Wizard’s Duel. Harry knows he has no chance. He is hit with the Cruciatus Curse and with the Imperius Curse. While casting an ¤ Imperio Voldemort tries to make Harry beg for mercy. Harry manages to resist and hides behind the grave of Voldemort’s father. The fight is about to end; Harry has nowhere to go.
  • In a final effort Harry spells an Expelliarmus at the same moment that Voldmort tries to finish him off with an Avada Kedavra. Both spells meet in mid-air and get connected, mixing into a deep golden bright light. They are both fixed to their Wands, struggling to win. The two lift from the ground. The golden thread forms a protecting web around them. Harry hears the Phoenix song and is told not to break the connection. His wand begins to vibrate heavily. Harry fights back and Voldemort’s wand now vibrates, a bead of light going in Voldemort’s wand’s direction. When it touches, something happens.
  • A tranparent ghost of Cedric comes out of Voldemort’s wand, telling Harry to hold on. Next the ghost of Frank Bryce comes out and the one from Bertha Jorkins. And finally his father, James and his mother, Lily. His parents tell him that when the connection breaks, he has to get the Portkey immediately to return to Hogwarts. Cedric asks him to take his body back to his parents.
  • Harry pulls up his wand and the connection breaks. Harry runs. The Death Eaters try to stun him and Harry casts back a Impedimenta while getting Cedric’s body. Holding Cedric, Harry uses an Accio to make the Triwizard Cup fly to him. He catches it and is transported back to Hogwarts.
Chapter 35 Veritaserum
  • Harry gets back to Hogwarts, bringing back Cedric’s body. People are trying to revive him. Standing above him, he sees Dumbledore. Harry tells him Voldemort is back. Fudge arrives. Amos Diggory is speeding to the scene to find out what happened. Everybody is hysterical seeing that Cedric is dead.
  • Harry is taken away by Moody to his office. Harry tells him what happened. Then he remembers Voldemort said there’s a Death Eater at Hogwarts. Moody tells him he knows who it is. It is not Karkaroff; it is he who made the Dark Mark appear at the Quidditch World Cup. He had put Harry’s name in the Goblet under a different school. He manipulated everybody to help Harry get to the Triwizard Cup first. He gave Neville the “Magical Mediterranean Water-Plants and Their Properties” hoping it would show Harry all about Gillyweed. When Harry didn’t find out, he made Dobby overhear him talking to McGonagall. He stunned Fleur in the maze and put the Imperius Curse on Krum to finish off Cedric.
  • In the Foe-Glass Harry can see people moving closer. Moody says he will kill Harry and bring him to Voldemort. According to him, he and Voldemort have many things in common. Both had disappointing fathers; both were named after their fathers and both killed their fathers. Moody raises his wand to kill Harry.
  • There’s a Stupefy. Moody is thrown back onto the floor. Harry sees Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape in the doorway.
  • Dumbledore explains that Moody is not the real Moody. Snape is told to get the strongest Truth Potion he has and get Winky. McGonagall is told to get the Black Dog at Hagrid’s house. Dumbledore gets Moody’s trunk and opens it. He takes out some Sneakoscopes, some parchment and quills and a silvery Invisibility Cloak and more items. When opening the last lock, it opens into an underground room. Lying on the floor is the real Mad-Eye Moody, stunned and controlled by the Imperius curse. The real Moody is sent to Madam Pomfrey. Next, Dumbledore explains that the imposter used a Polyjuice Potion to disguise himself as Moody, needing to keep the real Moody close to make the potion.
  • After a while the imposter Moody takes his real shape. Harry recognises him. It is Barty Crouch, the son of Mr. Crouch from the Ministry. McGonagall and Snape arrive with Winky. Barty Crouch is given Veritaserum and made to regain consiousness with an Enervate.
  • Barty Crouch explains how he escaped from Azkaban with his father and mother’s help, His mother was dying. They took Polyjuice Potion to change places in Azkaban. Next his father staged his mother’s death. He was controlled with the Imperius Curse and forced to wear an Invisibility Cloak. Winky was ordered to watch over him. Bertha Jorkins accidently found out and his father put a Memory Charm on her. He was allowed to go to the Quidditch World Cup where he sat using his invisibility cloak. But he broke out of the Imperius Curse and he stole Harry’s Wand. When he heard the Death Eaters he conjured the Dark Mark. He and Winky were stunned which broke their bond. Later he met again with Voldemort and Wormtail. Voldemort found out about him when he broke Jorkins’ memory charm. His father was put under the Imperius Curse by Voldemort and he took the place of Moody. After a chile, his father had begun to fight the Imperius Curse and escaped, heading for Hogwarts. He was warned and using Harry’s Marauder’s Map he found and killed his father. Finally he turned the Triwizard Cup into a Portkey and carried it into the maze.
Chapter 36 The Parting of the Ways
  • Barty Crouch is tied up. Dumbledore takes Harry upstairs. McGonagall is asked to guard Barty Crouch and Snape is sent to get Fudge who likely wants to question Barty Crouch.
  • Sirius is waiting upstairs for him. Dumbledore tells Sirius everyting that has happened. Fawkes, the Phoenix, flies over to heal Harry’s leg. Harry has to explain in detail about his encounter with Voldemort. According to Dumbledore the connecting Wands was the effect of a Priori Incantatem, the reverse spell effect. It’s because both wands contain a feather of Fawkes and they will not work properly against each other. One will force the other to regurgitate spells, the last murders the wand performed.
  • Harry will stay at the Hospital wing at night and take a Sleeping Potion.
  • Next morning he hears Professor McGonagall, Snape and Fudge arguing. Apparently Fudge took a Dementor with him for protection. The moment it entered it performed the Dementors’ Kiss on Barty Crouch. Fudge refuses to believe Voldemort is back. Dumbledore tells Fudge he should remove the Dementors from control of Azkaban and to send envoys to the Giants to extend a hand of friendship, but Fudge remains stubborn and still refuses to believe Voldemort’s return. Snape shows him the Dark Mark on his arm. Still, he is not convinced. Before leaving he gives Harry the thousand Galleons prize money.
  • Dumbledore makes arrangements to put everybody on alert, asking Mrs. Weasley and Bill to inform Mr. Weasley. Hagrid and Madame Maxime are sent for.
  • Sirius is asked to take his human shape. Dumbledore tells Snape and Sirius to lay aside old differences. Sirius is asked to contact Lupin, Arabella Figg, Mundungus Fletcher, the old crowd. Snape is asked to do ‘what he knows he must do’.

  • Before going back home, there is a Leaving Feast. Dumbledore speaks of his respect for Cedric and everybody raises a glass to his memory. He announces that Cedric was murdered by Voldemort and that it was Harry who brought his body back at the risk of his own life.
  • The trunks are packed. Harry says goodbey to Fleur and Krum
  • They go back home on the Hogwarts Express. Hermione tells them she found out Rita Skeeter’s secret. She is an unregistered Animagus. She can transform into a beetle. Hermione caught her on the window-sill in the hospital wing and put her in a jar. She put an Unbreakable Charm on the jar.
  • They have an encounter with Malfoy which ends up in a wizard fight, Ron, Hermione, Fred, George and Harry rendering Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle unconsious at the same time. Harry used a Furnunculus curse; George a Jelly-Legs Jinx.
  • Fred and George tell them that Ludo Bagman paid them money they won at the Quidditch World Cup in Leprechaun gold, which vanished a while later. The whole year they have been trying to get the money but Bagman did not want to give it to them. To get money, Bagman had bet with some Goblins that Harry would win the Triwizard Cup and that is why he tried to help Harry. Harry, however, drew with Cedric and so Bagman is in great debts. He ran for it right after the third task.
  • Harry gives Fred and George the prize money of the Triwizard Cup, telling them to invest it in their joke-items.
  • Harry goes back to the Dursleys.
