The Dragon School lies in Oxford, Emma’s Home Town. The Dragon is the biggest boarding and day prep school in the country, with an unrivalled reputation and superb record of winning scholarships and matches.
The Dragon School was founded as the Oxford Preparatory School in 1877 and moved to its present site on the northern edge of Oxford University soon afterwards. Its fifteen acres run along the banks of the River Cherwell and, for the past fifty years, it has been a charitable trust dedicated to providing all that is best in education. It is administered by a governing body.
For many years the Dragon accepted its youngest pupils at the age of seven into what was then known as the ‘Baby School’. In September 1995, the Dragon opened a new Junior School called Lynams, about a mile away on the Woodstock Road.
Children are first accepted after their fourth birthday, joining one of the Reception classes; they may also join subsequent year groups. When they reach the age of eight they usually move to the Main School, although this is not necessary or guaranteed. Streaming and setting are not part of the Lynams ethos, and children are taught to learn at their own varied pace. It is important that they enjoy these early days of schooling.
Lynams is fully equipped with an assembly hall, gymnasium, dining hall, library, art and design centre, games courts and teaching rooms. Girls and boys are taught a wide range of games and physical education, not only using the school’s own facilities, but also on nearby playing fields and at the Dragon. School hours are from 8:45 to 3:30, with slight variations for the youngest, and an excellent lunch is available. There is no school on Saturdays. A range of after-school clubs and care options is available.
