Hagrid: Effect in book 7

There’s no doubt that Hagrid is going to play in major role in book 7, but what sort of a role will it be? Hagrid was the first person from the wizarding world that Harry really made contact with and he has always been close to Harry’s heart. What does the future hold for the much beloved half-giant?

Ever since Jo Rowling said someone close to Harry would die in book 5, people have been highly suspicious that Hagrid will not survive until the end. Now that we know he will be present in the conflicts of the final book, there is no doubt he will have a large effect in the final result.

We have already witnessed just how powerful Hagrid is. In the fifth book, we witnessed him fighting off the attacks of several ministry trained wizards, and we know he is extremely brave due to his handling of dangerous creatures and fearless journies into the heart of the forbidden forest. He is definately a useful ally. If the wizarding war does in fact break into a physical battle with the Death Eaters fighting against the Order and the Ministry, Hagrid’s ability (though not particularly magical) will no doubt be highly effective in the fight.

Aside from fighting, what else can Hagrid offer? Hagrid has helped Harry, Hermione and Ron many times in the past including assisting them (inadvertently) to get to the Philosopher’s Stone and stop Quirrell from giving it to Voldemort. Hagrid’s knowledge of the wizarding world and closeness to Dumbledore has never been as important as it will be now, as Dumbledore may have confided things to Hagrid that he had told no one else. Who knows how much Hagrid really does know about Dumbledore’s plans for Harry?

With Sirius and now Dumbledore dead (or at least out of the picture for now), Hagrid may be the closest thing Harry has left as a fatherly figure. Hagrid introduced Harry to the wizarding world and has always been there for Harry when he’s been needed (with the exception of his brief stay in Azkaban in book 2). Even if he doesn’t assist the fight against Voldemort directly, the support and strength he can give Harry will be pivotal to the final result.

My theory:

I don’t see Hagrid as being much of a fighter in book 7. I think his information and emotional support of Harry will be his greatest contribution. I don’t believe Hagrid will be one of the book’s casualties, but I certainly see it as a possibility. I think Hagrid will lead a happy life after the dust has settled, but what does between now and then will definately play a role in whether Harry’s journey is successful or not.
