RSS and XML

Let’s try to explain the problem by giving an example: All your wall plugs do have two holes, right? All houses which you know are equipped with wall plugs with two holes. That way a vaccum cleaner firm can make vacuum cleaners which require two holed wall plugs as a source of energy and firms which produce drill mchines can make drill machines who require the same two holed wall plugs as the vacuum cleaners do. What is the logical conclusion? For many things there are standars, therefore vacuum cleaners do not require different wall plugs than drilling machines.

And it is the same with news systems, there are as many news systems as sites who offer those. XML is the wall plug in this comparision –the standard. And RSS is a further standard based on XML, like the standard that wall plugs all have a voltage of 220 volts ( in Germany). So unimportant whether you use the RSS Feed (termination for a RSS Data) of HPANA , tagesschau.de , or »EWE«, they all have the same principe (there are also some diferent versions) and therefore are legible for the programms.

RSS in the practic

Now you know what RSS is about, the next thing is the question why that system should be used. Probably you also know this situation: There are 3 websites where you get your daily information about your interests. So you type in an adress and check one website after the other. And probably you’ll realize that there are just three news which you aren’t interested in anyway.
You can do it much more efficient by installing one of those systems . After the installation you can search the RSS feeds of you favourite websites (hopefully EWE is one of them!) like this tuatorial shows. So you can check all headlines and decide what is worth to read more about.
The advantages are obvious: You save on time because you can check all websites for news at the same time. If you are online permanently the system shows when and where news were found.
If you see this picture: on a website then you know that you can reach all the latest news with just one click. By just adding the adress of that site to your RSS system.

RSS in portals like Yahoo!

The portal Yahoo! offers, like some other portals too the users to create their own RSS Feedlists. That way you can read the latest headlines of your favourite sites on yahoo. There is not much explaination required because Yahoo gives a good one: (click on the icon).

Klip – The clever alternative

Klip is an alternative which is no standard anymore. Just the programm KlipFolio of the firm serence supports Klip. In the end of June 2004 Martin got an E – Mail by serence offering him to help to publish such a Klip.

The advantage of this programm is that it is faster, more beautiful, more intelligent and simply better anrranged than an ordinary RSS Reader. You can even look at the weather in your region and at the TV programm at the same time … it is all up to you. So give the KlipFolio a chance, you won’t regret it!
