Mysterious Emma Watson
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Emma Watson plays a new Hermione who is less studious and more ambitious. Thus, she reveals a side of her personality that nobody could have suspected. The young actress of 14 tells us what she really thinks about her character and her beginnings in the cinema world.
The fact of begin a part in Harry Potter movies, does is draw nearer of a kind of work or pleasure?
It’s pure pleasure! I love being a part of these movies, I’m having so much fun! I already was a big fan of the books even before knowing that I had a role in the films, so it’s wonderful to play Hermione.
Are you considering yourself as a star, and how do you spend all the money you are earning?
No, I don’t feel like a star at all. Or only during two or three days, when I’m giving interviews, but then I become the old me, and everything is normal again. What am I doing with all this money? It is intriguing, isn’t it? I simply save it in a bank.
Did your life change a lot since you are playing Hermione on screen?
Not really, my family and my friends are still the most important things to me, but it’s evident that being recognized on the street is special! I also have a little figurine of myself, which is kind of weird, admit it! That apart these little details, my life didn?t really change since the beginning of this adventure, and I think it’s the same thing for Daniel and Rupert. I know them since the beginning, and they stayed themselves.
How are you living with your new status of celebrity?
I’m really alright with this situation, though I found besides the interviews and the premiere of the films, basically all we are doing is playing a role, and this is my favourite part of the job.
Do you have any similarities with the character, Hermione, that you’re playing?
I think that Hermione is a girl who really is determined and loyal to her friends, just like me!
How is it to play the most intelligent witch, and do you believe that girls are more intelligent than boys in real life?
Yes, without any doubt girls are more intelligent than boys! I’m only joking, that’s for sure! I love the fact that Hermione is so brilliant, I think that gives her some charisma. It’s really pleasant to play this character as the third book is my favourite one as is the third scenario.
Are you as studious as she is?
I like school a lot and I always appreciate to return to it, to become again a normal teenager and to frequent again my friends, although I’m not as persistent as she is! I like reading , but I prefer sports and arts.
Young girls like Hermione a lot. What does this do to you?
It’s really cool! It makes me feel something that some girls consider me as a model.
In the last film, there is a love triangle between you, Harry and Ron. Outside the stage, is your love life that complicated?
Hmm, no, I don’t think so, but it’s always easier to judge other people’s love life than yours!
Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban makes you shiver, even the adults. Have you ever said to yourself that this film was a little bit too scary?
No, not at all. On the contrary, I think the fact that it makes you shiver is more interesting. It’s true that there are some moments which are darker in the film, and the story is a little bit more complex, but in my case, I laughed from the beginning to the end.
In this third film, you put the costumes by the side to wear jeans and sweaters. Relieved?
Yes! We all are teenagers now so we prefer to wear comfortable clothes. We feel more like ourselves when we are wearing clothes that we are comfortable in. It also makes the cascades easier.
Precisely, the majorities of cascades are done by boys!
Yes, I know, and that makes me jealous! I would like to, me too, mount my broom and fly in all senses.
How did your personage evaluate since the first film?
She doesn’t let anybody walk on her feet easily. After two films where she endures the mockeries of others and pretends to ignore, she now decides to take her place and to say This time, it went to far.’ She even goes as far as giving Malfoy a good punch and answers the teachers. Hermione is a lot more rock&roll in this third film, and I love to play her like this.
According to you, do Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint have any similarities with their character?
Nobody could have been better than them to play Harry and Ron! Their roles suites them perfectly, especially in this one because they grew and they are more mature. We really see the evolution. I think that, from film to film, we interpret our personages better and better.
If you could decide of Hermione’s future, what would you like for her?
Sometimes, I really feel close to her and I need to protect her. So I wish, that, whatever happens in the end, she will like it and will feel happy. That’s what I wish for her.
Do you like being a teenager or can’t you wait for the day that you’ll finally be an adult?
I really am at the perfect age! I think that I’m leaving the most wonderful moments of my life and I try to take advantage of it as much as possible. I’m at a age when we discover life, when we make some mistakes and when everything is permitted, because that helps us to grow up. So I wish to take advantage of the liberty that being a teenager brings as long as I can.
Do you think that one day you will abandon Hermione’s character because you will feel too old to play it?
I can’t answer it at this moment, because we just started to film the fourth film and it approximately takes one year to finish shooting a film. I don’t see farther at this moment. But, whatever happens, I think that I would still like to act in Harry Potter, if I can still do it, for sure!
In the future, what would you like to do after Harry Potter?
I don’t have any ideas now, I don’t have the power to predict the future! I love doing shows, acting in films, singing and also dancing, so if I can find something that regroups all these passions, it would be fantastic! There are so many different aspects to take in consideration when we are a part of a film that I think I possibly can stay in the cinema universe.
