Snape: Good or Evil?
Author’s note: Here’s some holiday cheer for you all, sorry for the delay! Enjoy!
Yes, arguably the greatest debate of all right now. Is Snape good or evil? Did he really kill Dumbledore? Well, let’s save that for another article. For the purposes of this essay, let’s just assume that yes, Dumbledore is dead and yes, Snape killed him.
EVIL
This is one theory, that Snape was clever enough to fool even Dumbledore. He was a good enough Occlumens to convince Dumbledore that he felt remorse for putting Harry’s parents in danger, and Harry himself as well. Of course, the only reason everyone really trusted Snape later on was because Dumbledore trusted him. Everyone, trusting Dumbledore, didn’t question about Snape further. However, Snape had always had a sort of evil and crual demeanor, and was in Slytherin. He was also a friend of people who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters. Not to mention, his father abused him soundly during his childhood, giving him good reason to be bitter. Snape also is supposedly Voldemort’s right-hand man. Dumbledore even said himself that he makes greater mistakes than the average wizard. If Snape truly is evil, then everything is exactly as it seems.
GOOD
Another theory, of course, is that Snape really is good. He had to kill Dumbledore on Dumbledore’s orders, because Dumbledore somehow knew that it was Harry’s time to be the leader, and that his own time was almost spent. Why else did Dumbledore teach Harry about Horcruxes and such in specifically his 6th year? Why not wait another year, when Harry could possibly be more prepared? He knew he had to formulate a cunning plan, because Snape had given him information about Draco’s plan. Snape was much more valuable than Dumbledore, seeing as only Snape has almost an unlimited pathway to Voldemort, and that Voldemort trusts him now more than ever. Not to mention, he had the perfect history to be evil. He was perfect to take on the job to be a double-agent, much as how Lupin was perfect for his job in HBP. Dumbledore trusted Snape more than any other person; he even trusted Snape with his life.
MY THEORY
My theory, however, is that Snape is neither on Voldemort’s or Dumbledore’s side. He only solely supports himself, because whoever wins the war in the end, Snape will still be safe. He is definitely clever enough to pretend to be double-agent for each side, and has never shown that he has cared for anyone besides himself. There is an equal amount of evidence of him to be good and evil, so why not the “outcast”? Of course, the only other option would be that Snape is the “peacemaker,” but we all know that Voldemort and Harry won’y just lay down their wands and hug, so that’s out of the question. Really, Snape is like Voldemort in the sense that he has never vared for anyone but himself. Although why Snape doesn’t start up his own army is a mystery.
VERDICT
So, you make the choice: Is Snape good or evil? Whatever theory you choose to support, we’ll all find out who’s right in the end.
